PatJsy
If you are reading this, there is a pretty high chance you've got a facebook account and an even higher one you've become so dependant on it you check it as soon as you wake up... That was pretty much the case for me, even after multiple attempts to delete pointless "friends" and unfollow all the other idiots constantly moaning about their lives, I'd still find myself wasting hours and hours just scrolling up and down my news feed. That's not even the sad bit yet, eventually I realised I actually enjoyed getting likes on stuff; I would put up a clip or photo I should have been stoked on regardless but if it only a handful of likes before disappearing in peoples' newsfeeds I'd feel pretty bummed out... Anyway, to get to the point - not too long ago, myself and Rob Harris (shameless name drop) started talking about deleting our accounts and we actually got around to it yesterday. Now I've only been off it for 24 hours but it honestly feels as if I quit smoking which is really quite sad seeing as it's only a website! It didn't take long to realise how quickly I get bored without it though, especially today when it hasn't stopped raining since the morning but it didn't take long to find a load of other productive ways of spending my time. I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that if you find yourself wasting time going through the hundreds of silly posts on your newsfeed you might want to consider logging out for a while... Maybe even just for a couple of days just to realise how much extra time you'll have - I know I'm not going back though - there's a £5 bet with Rob on the line
Pashley26
Tl;dr. Guess you stopped using Facebook, congrats.
bikeperson45
myself and Rob Harris (shameless name drop) Standards of name dropping have really lowered these days.
eskimo
I couldn't resist signing in to comment on this. I feel the same for TF. TF's Organised Rides section used to be amazing, these days, pfff. Don't even want to mention the other stuff. I left Facebook for a bit, got accused of scamming once something went wrong with delivery because of it. You're right with it all. Though i bet you'll be back to it. I came back, but i had full intent on doing so. I'd like to delete most of my "friends" but i know it'll set some people off, some will question it, and others use it as an excuse to say shit. I use FB for following artists & companies, but recently i've caught myself cruising the feeds section. I often troll people, but i know it's not productive use of my time (even not trolling), just like this post but i do it anyway. I've said it before, the internet is bollocks, it's done nobody any good. Except maybe playing Halo with friends across the world. People make excuses for using FB, but yet what you say is all true. FB really, is for people with boring lives. Nothing more, nothing less. Am i an exception? Seems not.
dann2707
It is such a waste of time now and again however I've got a group for our Uni group on there which is absolutely invaluable for doing work and helping each other out so I could never leave it for that reason. Plus I think deleting it has such negative connotations. Ex deleted hers, what a weirdo
Jake.
I disabled mine last Friday or something, was a bit tough the first few days as I found myself randomly typing Facebook into the browser a couple of times haha. Did it for other reasons though. Will probs go back on it in the new year, but hopefully won't use it anywhere near as much as I did. Was a useful tool for organising rides and contacting mates. Skoze
Use it right and it's fine - it's awesome to fully get away from ALL technology every now and again. Whenever i'm out the country, i'm not in contact. I don't even try, and it's bliss. At home doing that is a lot less practical, but it's good to kick back all the same. I find it very useful for uni and keeping in touch with various friendship groups, but could definitely survive without it. PatJsy
Guess you stopped using Facebook, congrats. Only been a day so far but it's looking good! haha Standards of name dropping have really lowered these days. Yeah I'm quite bad with it haha People make excuses for using FB, but yet what you say is all true. FB really, is for people with boring lives. Nothing more, nothing less. Am i an exception? Seems not. It seem people use it to make their lives seem more exciting? At least that's the feeling I get when reading all the "having a great night out" posts... It is such a waste of time now and again however I've got a group for our Uni group on there which is absolutely invaluable for doing work and helping each other out so I could never leave it for that reason. Funny enough, I'm in the same boat but I just let them all now from now on they'll just have to text/e-mail me I disabled mine last Friday or something, was a bit tough the first few days as I found myself randomly typing Facebook into the browser a couple of times haha. Did it for other reasons though. Will probs go back on it in the new year, but hopefully won't use it anywhere near as much as I did. Was a useful tool for organising rides and contacting mates. All good points here, I watched a video this morning and instantly thought "hmm let's share this on facebook" haha
Perez
It really depends on what you use your FB for, the trick for me is to be very selective on my friends, always add true friends, or "friends" with similar taste ( ex: trals or bmx ). and that´s it. Now press the "like" button here.
PatJsy
it's awesome to fully get away from ALL technology every now and again. Definitely! You realise there's actually little need for it and people are over reliant on it
Mark W
People make excuses for using FB, but yet what you say is all true. FB really, is for people with boring lives. I've got family and friends spread out all across the UK, and indeed the world. Keeping in touch with - for example - my brother and friends who've moved out to NZ is a shitload easier via Facebook than most other mediums, especially around this time of year where being able to have group conversations easily is useful. Similarly, being able to see how my sister's kid is doing from the photos they post up of him from time to time is cool too in that they live a few hours away from me so I don't get to see them that much. If you get fully immersed in all the bullshit that goes on (e.g. giving a f**k about how many subscribers you have, the whole 'like for comments' shit and all that) then I'd agree that it's largely for people who haven't got anything else better to do, but as a tool for keeping in touch with people you want to keep in touch with it's pretty handy.
PatJsy
but as a tool for keeping in touch with people you want to keep in touch with it's pretty handy. Yeah, that was definitely one of the main things I thought about before getting off it. I guess I didn't have any family members on mine but even with friends from other places it seemed a bit inconvenient... I reached a conclusion that I'd normally text/phone my closest mates anyway and the ones further away can still get hold of me pretty easy just by facebooking a mutual friend who I see often. I have no argument for this though, when it comes to connecting people it's pretty damn good!the trick for me is to be very selective on my friends, always add true friends, or "friends" with similar taste ( ex: trals or bmx ). and that´s it. See that works well on paper but in my case at least it never took long to start accepting people I knew but wouldn't consider real friends... Blake
My newsfeed is full of bikes which is nice It kills time which I have to kill. It's a nice way to blank out sometimes, and me and my friends use it to send each other pictures/links that we find funny I wouldn't say i'm dependant on it but I'd find it a bit boring without it. bikeperson45
Me and my friends have a group so that's pretty much the only place I ever post or like anything. And when I'm on it I just see if there's a notification and I'm off pretty instantly if there isn't. Think I do pretty good at not being addicted or anything. And my phone's pay as you go which is a big reason
stirlingpowers
I use E-Mail to stay in touch with people. But I guess I am way too 90s - this is 2013, an era of a 1000 com apps feeds to constantly check. p_ruskin
As awful and annoying as Facebook is, it can be useful on the odd occasion i need to contact someone who i may not happen to have the number of, but i hate how i waste my time scrolling through the sh*t that fills my news feed I decided to just delete the app off my phone as its when I'm out and about with nothing better to do that i tend to scroll through it, i still have the usefullness of Facebook due to still having an account but i no longer feel the need to trawl through everyones posts, win win

Luke Rainbird
If you're not so weak minded that you let things take over your life that easily there's no reason social networking needs to be a bad thing. It's a tool, much like people who get overly worked up about it. I hope you noted the irony that once you'd weaned yourself of Facebook for a few days you came to an online forum to tell people about it?

Greetings
t seem people use it to make their lives seem more exciting? At least that's the feeling I get when reading all the "having a great night out" posts... Presumably that's your problem - people in your friends list who have nothing better to post. I have a couple of friends who keep posting really silly updates. It's mostly women, if it's men then they're usually from abroad (different Facebook culture?). Most of my friends are spread all around the country, it's really convenient to be able to keep in touch with them using one website and at the same time get news feeds from interesting pages, discuss upcoming competitions and get help if needed. Perhaps I'm just getting old but I get the impression that usually people are fed up with Facebook because of the immature content posted by others. It's not really Facebook that's to blame though. trialsiain
Facebook used to be good for keeping in touch with friends etc, butn ow my newsfeed is full of absolute shit because people have liked them. Things like a picture of a sunset then a stupid as f**k quote that has nothing to do with it. I would love if they just closed facebook down for a few weeks, just to see all the "facebook famous" c*ts actually do something.
Jolfa
If you don't like the shit on your newsfeed then hide that particular person/company, delete any repeat offenders. My feed was full of crap and I got requests to play wank games and join groups all the time, so I had a friend cull and now it's considerably better Breaks me when people cannot be without it though, there was a girl in the cinema the other night who had to check it 3 times during the film... A phone is a f**king bright thing to be playing with in a dark room!
Jolfa
Makes me laugh too, the amount of people who delete their accounts to prove some kind of point (and a announce that they are doing so before hand) then they're back within a week...
