Sam Nichols
I have some definitions and a table in a book. I'd like to insert this directly into my assignment. The definitions and table are, however, taken from another named source.. But I can't source the original document online. Therefore I don't really have any idea whether it's been manipulated by the book author or not.Do I reference the author/book, even though it's taken from another source OR do I reference the original source, even though I have no way of knowing if it's true to the original? It's a tricky one to explain but maybe someone will understand me? FamilyBiker
i think normally you should refer to the author himself/herself,so imo the original source, unless the source you named made changes to the original with authors permission,in that case the changed source you named. monkeyseemonkeydo
If it was me I'd just reference the author/book as it's his version that you're referencing to (and any potential changes he may have made). Chances are whoever's looking at the assignment (and if it is just an assignment rather than a dissertation or thesis that could well just be a bored postgrad) then they're unlikely to either check or worry about it.
bikeperson45
I think it's fine to just reference it from the book you're getting it from. I would bet £5 on that but no more.

Sam Nichols
Yeah, it's just an (impossibly) short assignment on FRP composites, so it's not going to be scrutinised to same degree a a dissertation/thesis.You confirmed my thoughts, cheers! nb88
I always just referenced the book at uni, never had a problem. Are you studying materials engineering?
Sam Nichols
Nah, Aircraft Engineering, but it's a materials module that I'm doing the assignment for.
