juantime
ok, so the thread where my Magura clamps screw on has been completely worn down so my master slave cylinder won't stay still = non functioning brakes. I'll upload a picture so it a little clearer what I'm talking about. I'm unsure what I need to to do to sort it. there's no other brake mounts on my frame so hydraulic rim brakes are my only option. the hole has already been tapped once, so I'm not sure if it's a good idea tapping it again? or even if there is room for another tapp? someone meantioned a "helicoil" but I don't really know what that is. I've been told there is a kit of things to tapp but I don't know where to buy that from? as it's so close to Christmas I can't really afford to be buying a new frame. any help will be appreciated, thanks. FamilyBiker
helicoils are basically a threaded insert, for which the frames old mounting holes have to be prepared first. i´d strongly recommend using "TIMESERT",made better experience with that in our workshop
juantime
oh thanks I don't think I can use a helicoil then. there's no thread left, so I don't think helicoil wouldn't be able to grip. but if it's not too expensive I'll still give it a go. do you know where can I get the stuff to do it from? FamilyBiker
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TIME-SERT-NEW-1508-M5-X-0-8-Metric-Thread-Repair-Kit-/281080471733?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item4171b3a0b5 seems kind of expensive, but you can use it everytime again, and a workshop in germany would charge the same to do it with 2 or 3 threads on your pics it looks like theres not much alu left,do it very carefully edit:search it elsewhere though,my example was from usa,ive seen that afterwards. maybe youll find it in uk a bit cheaper edit 2:helicoils are waaay cheaper: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=timesert+m5&_sop=15&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.Xthread+repair+m5&_nkw=thread+repair+m5&_sacat=0 Edited November 27, 2013 by FamilyBiker
Luke Rainbird
Helicoils use a larger diameter hole than the original thread with the insert reducing it back down to original (M5x0.8) size again. Unless your thread was previously made larger (occasionally people open them up to M6x1.0) then you that's one of the best ways to go really.
FamilyBiker
^^thats what i meant with"prepared for".you basically have a tool in the set to tap the hole the insert is going into, then use another tool to insert the insert. and that could be seen as the problem :your wall thickness of the surrounding material looks pretty thin on the inner side.... *gentlydoesit
2nd'd on the timserts that hole is well offset, might be a problem with either solution.
juantime
thanks yeah the guy who tapped it before didn't do the best of jobs on it but it worked for a while, so it was ok I guess... but yeah I'll definitely try these helicoils out, it'll be good to have the kit anyway incase something similar happens elsewhere. thanks for the help, I think the hole is 6mm currently so do I get a 7mm tap kit or an 8mm?can't afford the full set, it's like £40. need it to be around £10-15...
