isitafox
I tend to squeeze the chain up to the chainstay with my hand until it's about 5-10mm off
Blake
tight so it doesn't sag when looking at it, loose enough so it doesn't add more resistant when back pedalling
niconj
tight so it doesn't sag when looking at it, loose enough so it doesn't add more resistant when back pedalling I've never noticed any higher resistance (ON the bike) when back pedaling and I always tighten the chain as much as I can. customrider-Rhys
I've never noticed any higher resistance (ON the bike) when back pedaling and I always tighten the chain as much as I can. don't do that, you will f*ck your freewheel up in no time, caused by putting to much strain on the bearings, trust me.. my mate used to do it super tight, got told loads of times to slacken it, went through 3 freewheels in a couple months before he listened, as said you want it so it doesn't sag when looking at it, the freewheel spins freely when turned back wards and that the bottom side of the chain will touch the chain stay without much force.. so around an inch of play
FamilyBiker
an inch is a bit much. did you ever notice the fact the chainwheel/sprocket wear unevenly over time? adjust your chain tension so the chain is tensioned right at one of those tight spots, leaving it so it can just move up and down a few mm up to a cm. ive seen cracked bearing races due to tightening the chain full on Edited November 23, 2013 by FamilyBiker
