hI-OOPS-CAPS
I have a new bike with a standard threadless headset. The stem was too low however and I decided to change it. Though the riding position is better I now have a slight wobble in the forks. It's a carbon steerer and so doesn't have the star fangled nut. It's like it was assembled with compression. Any ideas what might cause this wobble?
AkuskaUK
Are you sure everything is tight? I have a Zhi stem that seemed to come lose every second. Make sure all bolts are done up while everything is set properly. It could also be the fork flexing.
Ash-Kennard
Try adding a small headset spacer as the top cap may be sitting on top of the forks
N.Wood
If theres no star fangled nut and no compression topcap you're not preloading the headset. You'll need a special compression topcap (like Hope Head doctor) that takes place of the star fangled nut.

dezmtber
I am asuming this is a road bike. Fittemd to your carbon steerer is a wedge which will be loose. You needs to remove the top cap with a 4 or 5 mm Allen key. That bolt will fit to the wedge which uses a 6 or 8mm Allen key. To setup the wedge loosen the bolt and Oush the wedge fully into the steerer tube and retighten the wedge. Then refit the top cap, and just before you tighten the top cap undo the stem bolts, then tighten the top cap bolt, followed by the two stem bolts on the side. Note the top cap bolt only needs to be pinched tight just till the rocking in your headset is gone.
hI-OOPS-CAPS
It's sorted, thanks for the help. I thought the top cap/plug was just to stop dust etc going down the steerer. However I know a star nut on alu/steel forks is to compress the headset, I never even thought the plug did the same job.
