isitafox
Right folks, pretty sure in my head about this but just wanted to run it past some other people and get their opinions. Sat in front of me I have 2 Echo FFW's, both purchased 2nd hand, neither of which I asked about how long they have been used (I have faith). My question is how old are they, one has ECHO written in large lettering on the lockring (maybe 1-2mm from the holes) and 4 large wide removal pockets on the other side, the other has ECHO written in smaller lettering (5-6mm from holes) and 8 removal pockets on the other side. Of the two the one with the 4 large pockets has a deeper louder click compared to the others higher pitch. Opinions? (I would get a pic up but I am at work where there is minimal phone signal so would take about an hour to email it to the box!)
Mark W
They changed to the four-slot design in something like 2010 - they've been out for a while like that. They're both SLs though, and both would have virtually identical internals. The difference in sound could be down to many things (e.g. how much they've been ridden, if one's been lubed, etc.). isitafox
Thought that was the case, when I first got back into riding at the start of 2010 I picked up an 8 pocket one 2nd hand. Such a better design, cheers Mark!
Mark W
I dunno, I kinda prefer the 4-slot design as it works just as well and saves a bit of weight. No biggie either way though!
isitafox
Every newer one I've had I've tended to butcher as I'm a rough arse so I'm glad to have picked this up!
Mark W
Internals-wise or the actual freewheel tool area? If it's the latter, bolting the tool in usually does the trick
isitafox
Yeah I do bolt the tool in but always found with trialtech cranks the bend at the end always made the washers slip slightly unless you were careful which I am not! dave33
The pawls in the early ones are much better quality and more durable
Jake.
I have the 8 pocket one, I got it second hand a year and a half ago I think? So must be from around 2010, it's silver too. I've snapped pawls in it but other than that it's very good imo.
