Inspired Skye Team bikes!

To coincide with the launch of Danny MacAskill's Imaginate video, Inspired have released details of the brand new Inspired Skye Team bike that Danny rode in the video.

The new Skye features a couple of revisions and tweaks from the previous model to improve things strength-wise as well as freshening up the geometry to meet Danny's needs. As can be seen in the photos, there are a couple of obvious tweaks such as the taper headtube (internal 1 1/8" top cup, standard 1.5" bottom cup), the change to a 70mm x 25° Hope stem and Continental tyres.

Are they re-introducing the hope tech brake then. I thought it was discontinued and replaced with the hope trialzone?

They look like trialzone calipers but with tech levers, I don't think that spec was discontinued only the tech trial mono was.

IIRC

Yeah it's just a trial zone caliper with a Tech Evo lever. I have them on my bike and whilst they ain't that pretty they seem to do the job. Due to the girly, horrible little rotors they do make a funny sound when you lightly press the brake to slow down but almost a year in and mine have worked every time in every condition so there ain't too much wrong.

The new Skye looks infinitely nicer than the original, and the shorter back end looks very tidy.

Will they be offering this Skye as a frame kit, as I didn't see any mention of it on the website?

I wonder what compound they went for on the tires. Ive tried the super tacky versions on Duncan Shaws bike and they would have answered a lot of natty riders prayers...

Does the paint job remind anyone of the old Ellsworth Specialist frames?

Is that a new Inspired saddle? Looks good in that material.

They've had the Tech levers with Trial Zone calipers for the past couple of batches of Skye bikes. I think if it's a 'big' customer Hope seem to be fine to make those brakes, just not for a little old shop like us...

Indeed - just the Tech Trial brake got discontinued and replaced with the Trial Zone.

Aesthetically they're not amaaazing, but I really appreciated the extra adjustment of the Tech levers compared to the Mono Trial brakes I'd used before. Good to hear your brakes have lasted that long though, that's pretty good going!

I'm not sure about the frame-kit - I imagine if they do it wouldn't be for a little while after the complete bikes get released.

For natural I can imagine the stickier ones would be good, but the pair I tried had that compound and I hated them for street. They're the slowest tyres I've ever used, so even though they were nice and grippy they just felt a bit crap. The ones on that Skye felt like a slightly harder compound though (more Rubber Queen-y than Der Kaiser-y) and seemed to roll better. Hopefully they go with that for production...

Seems to be a new Inspired pivotal too. The little logo tag on it's a really nice touch (Y)

I asked Danny about that (as I liked the idea) but he said it wasn't necessarily based on that, just that he wanted an anodised finish, but that it's not actually anodised. Can't tell if by the name of the new paint job whether it actually is paint or will be anodised.

I meant more in terms of the rotors (which I hate) which I appreciate is a simple job to swap out for all my moaning. The fronts only just beginning to fade now but I haven't changed the pads since I've had the bike so about £14 a year seems good. Yeah, I wouldn't be inclined to try the mono levers as I can get a bit specific when dialling in bite points and reach on trials bikes.

Is it true (heard it from Danny but he wasn't 100%) that the production bike will come with a steel Hope axle? If so do you reckon these will be available as an aftermarket part as I think my 2nd alloy one might have gone. Also do the axles on the new bike (the Inspired ones) differ in terms of their interface or is it just the finishing?

Shit, just realise what day it is! :) Have fun man!

I thought it was going to be anodised, but the frame gets shot blasted then has a kind of weird almost translucent paint finish to it. So yeah, looks sort of anodised but isn't. Looks good in the flesh though (Y)

I'd agree about the Trial Zone rotors too - I think for that sort of setup I'd probably want to run something like the Mono Trial rotors or something similar (or Saints or whatever, really - just something a touch beefier).

Not too sure about the Hope axle, sorry!

EDIT: Oh, and thanks!

So I'm not Danny, and other riders not Danny. This is strange - to produce custom bike that designed for one rider, his needs and anthropometrics.

Basically every signature bike is to the exact specifications of the rider putting their name to the product (in most cases!).

Danny's specification will meet most street riders specifications too.

  • 3 months later...

any one know when these are going to be available? and if they are doing a frame only option??

Not sure if this is linked but Conti haven't put in to production the tyre yet. They don't have a name for it and as it's being made in their Germany factory it keeps slipping down the list of priorities being that trials is such a small market. Also I'm a bit concerned about their outlook for these tyres..... I think they've underestimated the want for them. They commented that they'd only make around 50 (so you can see why they're not breaking their backs to make them) and that they'd retail for a minimum of £50 each.

There is also talk of a far-east made version not in the Black Chilli compound but this won't be in the foreseeable future.

50 on top of OEM.

Also... you think? How many trials riders (considering A. They're young, B. They're trampy) will shell out £100 for a set of tyres?

When I spoke to them I suggested they might have underestimated demand but that knowing trials riders seem to think it's fair to pay shit all for things that at £100 a set they might not do so well. Their reaction was that if someone is paying £2300 for a bike (the Skye) then £100 for tyres isn't an issue. I said that their customer isn't only Skye riders and that a lot of 24" riders would want to run them but they might want to compete with the Holy Roller.

Ok, this is valid thinking, accepted. Besides the Skye, they most likely will not sell thousands.
