eskimo
Tech thread got closed, sooo lets have another pc tech thread in here. Tablet, no good. Need a keyboard and OS to actually do stuff. Chromebook. As above. Netbook. Still appear to be underpowered for use other than internets. Mac. Do one. Laptop. Heavier, larger, battery draining? versus Ultrabook. So how are Ultrabooks? I need something to keep me occupied on some loooong upcoming journeys. Basic videos, and basic games. I'm talking games from 2000 and before. (i will have power socket). I will need access to the internet for information and banking. I would like to use it as a portable music source. No drive required. So must have usb ports. Webcam, blutooth and bs isn't required. Windows 8? Looks and sound poo. Apparently hard to downgrade from? I said f**k it and bought an ultrabook on Amazon from their warehouse deals as you get a month of use for free. It's an Acer S3. Probably loaded with bs software. 13.3" i5- 2467m 4gb 240gb SSD, which is what sold it for me. Do these help save power at all? HD integrated 3000 graphics Windows 7 1.3kg So should be pretty good. Cost £365. Worth it? Or would i do better elsewhere and/ or with something else? I was looking at new mainly but saw this as it was W7 and SSD all the way. I think £500 should be sufficient for a decent machine but obviously less is better.
TrialsIsHard
An i5 and an SSD, will mean it's perfectly quick for file browsing booting and internetting. 4gb of ram isn't huge, and I can't see it being a problem for what you want the laptop to do. And if you're playing games pre-2000 you don't need to go for a gaming machine at all, on board graphics will be more than enough. Seems pretty fit for purpose to me
Muel
It's an Acer Worth it? No. Edited June 4, 2013 by Muel
TrialsIsHard
No. To be fair, we had a problem with an Acer Aspire v3 the other day, and their warranty/customer support was really good. Buuuuut the product did go wrong within 2 months of owning it..
eskimo
Is Acer a bad call full stop then? What brand? Windows 8? Thought Tf was the one for pc tech heads?
Muel
My girlfriend has one and I've worked on a few others. I now refuse to go near them. Bloody awful brand. I'm not sold on W8 either. I have a few licenses for it but it's a bit shit.

monkeyseemonkeydo
Haven't used W8 yet but it looks like it'd be fine on a phone or tablet but not for a real computer... Also what's the deal with these SSDs? Are people sticking their OS and stuff on them to run uber fast or what? They seem to small capacity to realistically be used for storage. Edit: That SSD question should've gone in JT's thread not here.
ZeroMatt
Acer support is pretty good but RMA rates are quite high. Asus, Toshiba and Sony tend to fare the best. But of course as with anything the model chosen is important too.
Muel
I stick to Samsung. Never had an issue with any of their products.
anzo
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B009HQ6SM2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1370458899&sr=8-1&pi=SL75 Budget depending, these are the dogs bollocks. We now use these as a portable standard at work and never had problems. Extremely lightweight and a manageable size.
MadManMike
Gotta say I've owned one Acer and repaired a couple others... They seem cheaply made and not all that reliable. I'd avoid them based on my previous experience.
Tony Harrison
My Acer Aspire One (early one) was a great piece of kit for the money. I looked at the Asus ZenBooks, but the first generation ones had awful screens, so I bought a Vaio Z-Series instead (not an ultrabook). If I was buying now and I wanted something to travel with, I'd look at the Asus UX-32.
eskimo
I'm on pc now so i can reply properly this time. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B009HQ6SM2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1370458899&sr=8-1&pi=SL75 Budget depending, these are the dogs bollocks. We now use these as a portable standard at work and never had problems. Extremely lightweight and a manageable size. Only £300 over budget I wanted some power and speed, but i don't actually need it. to be honest i don't even think i should leave myself £500 for one. I just don't trust laptops to last, though i've never had one. I think 13" is a good shout. Ultrabooks are expensive. I guess i'll try and get something basic but ligh/ small from a good brand. Like an i3 with 4gb. But the lack of Windows 7 models is slightly concerning.
