UK_SPAWN
Hi all. Iv been playing around with my rear wheel trying to get my chain correct. But it seems that its impossible at the moment because when my right crank is in the forward position the chain is tighter than when in the backward facing position. It seems to be the freewheel which i am due to replace soon. I was just wondring if anyone else has had this, and if it was the freewheel. Also the position of the rear wheel seems to also change the tension, but much less drastic... Is my rear cog also warped... Any info apreciated. Cheers
Kevinfor
I think the freewheel is supposed to be like that. http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/media/guides/maintenance_snail_cam_setup/m5.html Turn the cranks so the chain is lose and work from there.
UK_SPAWN
Ah rite, yeah iv been doing it correctly then. tensioning on the loose point. Thank you verry much sir
Blake
yeah that's normal mate. only piece of advice I can say is that while the tarty guide is good, I always tighten my chain when it is in the tighter position to stop it overtightening
UK_SPAWN
it seems less aparent on a higher quality freewheel. Im still guna change the rear cog too..cant hurt.
UK_SPAWN
Yeah iv been finding the "high point" if you will, of the freewheel and also the rear wheel. Im thinking of taking the chain off and alighning the 2 high spots to cancel eachother out... If that makes sence lol...
Blake
don't bother mate it won't make a difference. it also happens on all freewheels, even seen it on the echo Ti ones so quit sweating
UK_SPAWN
Do you know why? Are they made this way intentionally?
trials hoe
i thought it was down to the cranks? if your fw was eccentric all its internals would fall out at the loose point surely? if the threads are cut at a different time to the splines the threaded section could easily be eccentric to the splines causing the issues with chain tension. the sl fw i've had on 3 different sets of cranks have all had a different amount of loose-tight movement. also i set up at the tight point too, just so its not too tight and make do with it. the tight point on mine is right foot forward so there is no slack when hopping around. must be a pain for the lefty guys having a flappy chain, assuming everyone else has the tight spot right foot forward, all mine have been.... UK_SPAWN
Im left footed. And the slack is left foot forward... I was thinking different to that " atleast im not kicking when the chain is at its most tense, making it snap/mess bearings up..." yeh ur rite iv allways noticed it too... If u had a hub and fixed cog.. Anyone with that setup seen this???*like a profile/king. Cheers. Edited May 20, 2013 by UK_SPAWN
FamilyBiker
i have to turn my chainwheel a quarter turn around every few months, got a hope setup though. its wearing unevenly from kicking cant be the reason for ffw i´d guess Edited May 20, 2013 by FamilyBiker
dezmtber
Try turning your cranks 180 deg, on the bb axle. See what that does to the tight spot
UK_SPAWN
Yeh iv.done that to try n resolve my other problem of crank wobble.. Yeh the bb is straigt its not that its definitly freewheel. Cheers though dez.
