butterztrials123
I just changed from 24-18 to 18-12 on my onza bird. before i did this i asked about it on the forum. they said it would be harder to pedal. so i was surprised when it was easier to pedal. so could i have made a mistake or something? bing
No mate. 18-12 is perfect mod gearing. You'll find it loads easier to ride
FamilyBiker
in theory it should make no difference, you´ve gone down 6 teeth on front and rear. but new drivetrain involves new bearings, maybe the old ones were knackered?
AdamR28
It's the ratio of the teeth not the difference between the two numbers that dictates the gear ratio. If he went down 17 teeth... 18:12 is a harder gear than 24:18. Did you change anything else at the same time?
FamilyBiker
youre right, adam. had to have a coffee to get it,posting without beeing fully awake haha 24:18=1.333333 18:12=1.5 with this wheelsize it makes a difference really
CC12345678910
Forgive me for asking this (cos I have seen photographic proof of someone doing this) but you have put the 18t on the crank haven't you? What else did you replace exactly? Could higher EP give you impression stuff is lighter to crank around?
ben_travis
while i doubt it, i would love if it came to be that he'd actually started running 12-18. That'd be amazingly funny while also feeling bad for the guy.
CC12345678910
Ben as I said, I've seen photos of someone doing this... To the OP. Please don't be offended by such posts... With the amount of information and description you gave, it's a 'just checking' kinda post. Cos I gotta wonder what has happened? You changed from a newbie bike standard done for cost reasons, to a standard every mod worth it's salt is sold with when new. And yet you say it feels worse? butterztrials123
I put the freewheel from the wheel straight to the crank and put a 12 sprocket on the wheel, nothing else
Ben Cox
This may sound silly. But are you sure its an 18 not a 16? As that would make it feel quite light and a bit poo. Ben
williams
Orrrrr, you're not just used to it yet. Eitherway, 18-12 is the best gear ratio for a mod
cardenas_26trials
Maybe he also changed pedals? lighter pedals can make it feel different
Ben Cox
Or longer cranks make it feel lighter. Ben
dezmtber
Wow I am gonna go buy some lighter pedals right away
PaRtZ
Or longer cranks make it feel lighter. Ben 1) Check you're definitely running 18:12. Count the teeth... 2) Shorter cranks will make the gear ratio feel 'harder'. So changing to 18:12 AND putting shorter cranks on will feel REALLY hard 3) If you've changed your pedals, that will make a difference too I guess, but that would be obvious 4) Make sure your chain is lubed up too If all youve done is as you say, 18t freewheel on cranks and 12t on rear and its still too stiff then you have two choices. Suck it up (in a nice way), its pretty much a standard and might improve your riding, OR change the rear to a 13t sprocket. Mr Read ran one a while ago on a silver monty 221ti (memory like an elephant ) to give it a light feeling. Doing this though will lower your 'top speed' and might mean you dont get the most out of your pedal kicks....
butterztrials123
It's defiantly 18-12 and I think the cranks are either 160 or165
Jake.
Got a picture of the setup?
butterztrials123
No but it doesn't matter at the moment because my freewheel broke after just 4days on the cranks and I don't know why
isitafox
Chain too tight
