AkuskaUK
Does the new Rammstein Der Kaiser have the same snakebite/puncture resistance as the standard Der Kaiser? I was thinking about getting one to run at lower pressures without the bad thoughts of a puncture ruining the day. The Rammstein is thinner at 2.4 so it will run on my Because easier. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this new version? Thanks in advance.
Blake
I wouldn't hold the 2.4 too close to its word.
N.Wood
Get a Der Baron... Narrowest of the 3 tyres, cheaper than the rammstein, tried and tested softer compound, gret sidewalls etc etc. Cut the edge of the tread down if its catching on your frame. AkuskaUK
I run a Maxxis High Roller at the moment and have a problem with constant snake bites, would the Der Baron stop this too?
N.Wood
Is it a dual ply Maxxis? If it is, you need to pump it up harder and / or ride smoother. Der baron and der kaiser use the same carcass and compound, so yeah will help for sure.
AkuskaUK
Brilliant, ill look into one of them then. Is the Rammstein one not worth it then?
N.Wood
Well I've never tried one but its more expensive, has a potentially less grippy compound (harder), and to be honest the DK / DB is about as good a tyre as you can get imo so will be hard for he rammstein to be better. valk
Puncturing a Maxxis high roller? You must be an anvil :|
Mark W
Well I've never tried one but its more expensive, has a potentially less grippy compound (harder), and to be honest the DK / DB is about as good a tyre as you can get imo so will be hard for he rammstein to be better. I don't think it'll be an outright better tyre than the Der Kaiser/Der Baron, but for riders who prefer tyres like the RQ I think it's a reasonably good option. Although the DK/DB tyres are super stable and puncture resistant, the downside to that is they weigh a lot and do make your bike feel kind of sluggish for some stuff. Just from handling the Rammstein version you can feel it's got a more supple carcass (that's a weird phrase) than the regular DK, so even though it's a comparable weight I don't think it'd necessarily feel as heavy or slow. ***SHIT COMPARISON ALERT*** To give you an idea of the difference, when we send tyres out we usually twist the tyre into a figure-of-8, then loosely fold that in half so it makes the tyre more compact. You basically can't do that with a Der Kaiser or Der Baron, whereas doing it with the Rammstein version is pretty easy because it just moves more. It's still got a pretty tough sidewall though - much more so than the RQ. The grip's still going to better than a RQ too, so if you want a slightly grippier, slightly more stable Rubber Queen (or similar tyre from any other brand) it's a good shout. If you can f**k with a DK/DB though, I don't think you'd really benefit by going in that direction.
narrowbars
I've recently worn out my De-Kaiser and just got the newer Rammstein-Kaiser version, will try and remember to write a little review in this thread after I've ridden it for a couple or weeks
