p_ruskin
In need of a new kit, If i want tap out to M6 and insert back to M5 which size kit do i need? The sizing system has confused me slightly, is an M6x1.0 kit and M6/insert that will take an M5 bolt? Or do i need the M5x0.8 kit to repair/replace M5 threads? Cheers
bing
M6x1.0 to repair and use m6 threads, uses a 6mm drill bit M5x0.8 to repair and use m5 threads, uses a 5mm drill bit This is because the insert is physically bigger than 5mm, and the thread cutting tap needs some material to cut into, so the coil can be wound in and be made secure If you want to keep the m5 threads, providing there is enough material left on the frame and its not completely wrecked, use an m5 kit. Otherwise its a drill out job and use the m6 kit, and then you will have to get your clamps modified to suit Edited May 16, 2013 by bing

p_ruskin
Yeah there is plenty of spare material on there, still hoping to run M5 bolts so the M5x0.8 kit comes with a M6 tap and the inserts take it back down to the M5 size? bing
No, its a specific helicoil tap, its bigger than 5mm but its 0.8mm pitch, this is so when the coil is wound in, its the correct dimensions, and gives you a good strong thread. In many cases, the helicoil is stronger than the material to start with. You will still be able to use the m5 bolts with this kit, and it should be quite strong, this is a typical kit Edited May 16, 2013 by bing
