Does anyone else use Tar on Rim's?

I never said there was any thing wrong with using Coust pads, but I commented on your claim that they are the best pad out there, if they are so great then even less reason to carry tar with you.

And even less chance of that your brake might go shit for no reason.

Personally I use tnn blues and after a tube change my brakes still work as required for my riding style.

IMO to many riders expect an impossible amount of hold from their brake in situations such as a failed gap when the brake slipped. And then blame the brake for being shit for failing the gap.

Maybe I just have much lower expectations of a working brake ?

I've not yet experienced it going poop, but I've had other pads go on me in the past.

I do put it on after a tube change though, but it must be my riding style :/

Although I could make do with less hold, Having unbelievable braking performance gives me a hell of a lot more confidence, I obviously don't trust myself to ride without an incredible brake...

Fair enough, but having a crazy amount of bite which is confidance building but then not backed up with hold when needed makes me afraid to go for stuff.Oh well

I'm just off out to ride in the rain.

I swear by tar on a rim brake, have done since someone showed me it in about 1998 at Penshurst.

Grinds give a horrible feeling if you ever brake above 4mph, and they look shit. I don't ride in rain either so I don't care about the wet advantages.

Due to a new wheel build and no access to an angle grinder, i rode my first ride today on a smooth rim! It was quite good (echo white pads) but with tar they became incredible! Once it started to rain it did make it seem like i was running brakeless though :(

You either need to change your technique or buy a new rim.. cause you should not need tar on a fresh grind with those pads!

Don't use tar on a fresh grind, kinda defeats the purpose of a grind... It rolls on between the gaps/rough edges the grind does and makes your rim smoothen out much quicker.

it makes mine amazing the wet and dry, so thats why i carry on using it

I suppose that it's all personal preference?

Exactly... As with all things brakes and infact trials in general. Everyone has their own reasons for using / not using tar so if it works for you then great, if not try not to lose any sleep over it.
