arw_86
Thought I would ask fellow TF members' advice on an auction I have just won. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271203204424?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 I stumbled across this in the last 10 minutes of the auction. I messaged the seller asking a few questions regarding contradicting info etc, but stated I may take a punt on it due to it having a returns policy and paying by paypal so I will have pretty good buyer protection. I'm 99% sure that retina displays are only on the latest released macbook pros. He hasn't stated year and obviously he has created an awful advert, but I went with the word retina. Other things I noted were it says 8gb memory but 512gb storage. This doesn't tie up with apple, as 8gb has 256 and the 16gb has 512. He has stated that it comes with 10.7 lion but apple said it comes with 10.8 mountain lion, although they did say if it is 10.7 it will update within 30 days of registration. I haven't paid yet and I'm going to contact the seller and ask for the serial code on the box, although it could be any box. I'm just massively wary as it seems to good to be true. This is after all a £2300 laptop which is brand new in box and I got it for £660. What do people recommend? hold off paying until I make contact with buyer to clarify what he is selling? I bet most of you will read this thinking I'm an idiot for bidding but I thought I wont pay yet and I have buyer protection to fall back on, hopefully. I hope it just sold so low because he created such a wank advert that it scared people off. Thoughts?
TrialsIsHard
He's listed 70 computers/laptops in the last 5 days.. Also the maximum value of item he's sold is £49.99? All seems a little suspect to me. It begs the question where he got around 30 MacBook Pro's!
AndrewEH1
There is no way this is legit.... All previous feedback as a seller has been on sub £20 items, and an Xbox 360 for £50... Unless they have ram-raided PC World how the hell have they got there hands on about 80 high end computers and laptops?
Muel
All feedback from 2010. Stinks of a hacked account IMO.
dezmtber
I agree there's no way its legitimate. Anyone selling that amount of computers would have way more feedback. More like 1000+ feedback and powerseller ect...
arw_86
didn't look at his previous stuff. it is suspect for sure, Ive messaged him for serial number and photos. If it still feels fishy, he can f**k off if he thinks im sending any money. edit: is it best to wait to see if it is all bullshit or contact ebay saying i think its bullshit? I want to try protect all the other bidders on the other auctions. Edited May 9, 2013 by arw_86
AkuskaUK
Wait and see if he squirms out of sending the serial and a picture of the MacBooks base (as this contains the serial number) don't as for the box serial, if it is bollocks then i would report him!

The Mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro came in at 2.6Ghz with a 512GD SSD, it COULD be that model. They also came with OSX 10.7.4 and 8-16GB Ram

I have the 2013 2.7Ghz Retina MacBook Pro with 16Gb ram...
Edited May 9, 2013 by AkuskaUK
Sam T
Also ask if you can pick it up? See if hes willing or dead set on postage only?
sfboy
Some more info. The business address is listed as Newstead, Gravelly Hill according to the ebay listing. According to 192 http://www.192.com/places/tf/tf9-4/tf9-4ju/ That business at Newstead is called Abbey Motor Services, but a google search doesn't yield anything of that name at that address. http://www.abbeymotorservices.com/ is a garage in Tamworth, could be related, but maybe not. Take from that what you will. Actually, just look at sellers other items, feedback and c'mon now. Edited May 10, 2013 by sfboy
Tony Harrison
As ever, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Don't send a single penny to them. Brand new Retinas cost more than £499 trade, so if these were real then they'd be stolen...
