Hello Trials Forum Anyone In Or Around Oxford?

Hello there, I've been put in a fortunate yet irritating position, I've been given a 3 month placement at BMW working on the new mini this summer, yay. bad news is that i have to keep my house in Coventry as my GF has to live there, driving from Coventry to Oxford will cost around £450 a month, and all accommodation in Oxford is insanely high, been looking at mobile homes and camping and everything.

What I am asking for: Anyone with a spare room to put me up on weekdays, I intend to be in Coventry on the weekends as I will have work. I can put in for food and all the bills and some rent, but i will be very skint all summer. Need accommodation from 1st June-31st August.

In return you will have a riding buddy to go out with very regularly, also very handy with bikes, so you will have a personal mechanic, niceee. I also have a car that regularly has bikes crammed into it, should we want to ride further a field.

Can anyone help me?

Doesn't necessarily have to be in Oxford, 10-15 miles would be ideal though.

Cheers, Ash

Thought about commuting Ash? There's a lovely M40 placed conveniently between the 2 cities. Might work out the same as renting out a room etc. depending on what car you run.

Sorry I'm not much help. Congrats on the placement. I saw about 6 new mini hatches the other day convoying in their funky graphics! From what I can make out, they look hideous!

there is another who was looking to commute, that brought the cost of commuting to around 450 a month, more than the rent! but now he wants to live in Oxford but is in halls so wont have 2 rents to pay with no money as his tenancy finishes in june

My old room was about as good deal as I could find in Oxford. It was £370 per month including all bills (as in broadband, TV licence and everything.), with parking and on the right side of Oxford for the BMW stuff. (Assuming you'll be at the Cowley plant, it's only about a 10 minute cycle away.) Can let you know my landlords number if you want? He may well have a spare room over the summer and be glad to fill it.

Not really sure what else you could do. The halls connected to the Oxford Brookes Headington campus could be worth trying to see what they say. Good luck with it.

(I just added you to the Oxford Brookes Mountainbiking facebook page, figured it might be of some use.)

What about commuting by train+bike?

Also considered getting a more economical car? If you can push up to 60mpg then you should only be spending about 250 a month on fuel, drop that down to 50mpg and you're looking at 300 a month. Pick up an old high mileage diesel mondeo/focus for cheap and you should get that, sell after 3 months if it hasn't fallen apart and profit :)

58 miles, twice a day.. 5 times a week.. 812 miles. By my workings thats £81.20 a week, your car must to 5 miles to the gallon or something :P It might end up cheaper over the course of 3 months to buy a more economical car, rather than spend that money on rent.

EDIT: >_< you said per month..

Hour drive each way, I would commute, it's not that bad! Alternatively, you could do what I do, commute twice a week (100 miles each way) and stay over night occasionally. Edit, in fact.. I'd say commuting along a motorway is sort of nice. It's a rare 1.5 hours that I can spend without feeling like I need to be looking at my computer.

No, my car is reasonably economical, although I have been thinking about getting a diesel for this. but I have no capitol so would have to sell my car to get the next one, risky as i work 9 miles away. I would prefer to get a new car to be honest aswell, mine is a tad beaten.

If someone can put me up, I wont bother with the car. still have time.

If you need capitol and your credit rating isn't too bad I can recommend a zopa loan, good rates and super flexible. Get loan, buy car, use for three months/pay 3 months interest, sell car, repay loan.

I got one a couple of years ago to clear up overdrafts, I think the rate was something like 5% compared 12-15% everyone else wanted. It works by borrowing off other zopa users so basically cuts out the bank and it seems to work exceptionally well :)
