So I have 2 bikes I'm looking at look really nice lots of details. One guy said that he doesn't do PayPal and if I could make a bank transfer, the other has pay pal but only insists on doing a gift transfer, one of these guys just saw I was looking for a bike and said if I wanted his so they are all looking dodgy, please help
bing
Ask for phone numbers and proof of addresses before money changes hands. That way you have some security and know where to look if it goes tits up. To be fair on here the scammers have been weeded out, and the mods won't stand for it, so if anything does happen they'll help you find them and get your money back, to the best of their abilities. Danny00135
Ask them if you can collect it.. If they give you an address and arrange a time for you to come and get it, it's genuine.. If not, it's dodgy..
bing
Also, remember the old adage, "if its too good to be true, it probably is". If anything smells remotely not right so to speak, then walk away. It's your money you are spending, and the scammer will not give a f**k about that. Like dan says, ask if you can collect if its in reasonable distance. If you can't, you want photos of it packed up, and a photo of the tracking docket/receipt. Then that way its all traceable. At the end of the day there is an element of risk involved with any secondhand part transaction.
persistant_itch
I Got scammed on here a few weeks back and in all honesty,i could of easily avoided it by just going with my gut. my suggestion would be to buy only off people with alot of posts or good feedback, check the dispute boards to see if their name is mentioned. But mainly, i'd go with what is said above, ask to view it, and also only pay through paypal goods and services. if you send it as a gift youve no comeback. dezmtber
Ask if you can collect. Just to get the adress then ask for a price shipped.
TrialsRob
I don't think asking for an address will do you any good unless you can verify it is their address, after all what does Mr Nigeria care if you turn up to a bogus address.
Clownbike
If it helps I'm not a 'scammer'... I guess there is only so much you can do avoid being scammed. I personally would always try and go to see it first where possible. Ironically I was scammed and even though I used PayPal I only got half the money back as he'd sent me 'most of a bike'. pete_s
To be fair it's the gamble you take with any shopping where you don't physically pick the goods up and take it to the cashier. It's just that you feel you have more of a come back if anything goes foobar, but any episode of Watchdog will show you that's not always the case. petrolhead19
If there worried about fee's on paypal, you can still send money as goods and you pay you fee's instead of them, that way if it goes tits up you can claim your money back
fbmbmx
If he is not in you'r area maybe ask if there is another member on here who is close to him and see if they know him or if they could go have a look at the bike for you to check for cracks etc. then if they report back all being good you go ahead and buy it and buy the member a mc donalds? If it's anywhere near Portsmouth i don't mind going and having a look for you

Worth covering your own back for the extra few quid.
Muel
I used to just make sure I bought from reputable members, job done.I only got scammed once (by Pete Wright of all people), but it was only £15 for a rotor, so thought I'd take the risk. I just threatened him with some form of legal action and he refunded it.

UK_SPAWN
If you buy a bike and get the details like contact numbers and addresses etc, and u have chat logs and txt messages and all the rest. and u specifically ask to confirm no cracks or dents... what can you do if the bike arrives cracked/dented, or if they don't send it at all. do you have a legal agreement, can you do anything, say if you paid paypal, or bank trsansfer? Cheers guys,
