LiamWood!
If you can afford to replace them on a monthly basis.
Mark W
I think most people can probably afford to have them replaced for free under warranty if they do break? You know, like how Andeee got a new replacement freewheel for free?

chris H
I like how you had to use (ANDEEE) as an example. Not that we didn't know they blow up in a couple of months with out the petty dig. smooth.

SamKidney
Been riding my "new" one since august last year. Still going with all of its 108 engagements.... and I'm not the lightest on my drivetrain.
BradJohnson
I beasted a new one today as you well know Callum, and that felt as solid as the one i had on my echo which was about 9 months old (not sure if old or new) It was also black. Danny00135
I think Echo discontinuing the silver model really does add that "once you go black, you never go back" Just a shame in this case black is poorer..
williams
I have "the new one" and it's amazing. Have had mine since september.

Jake.
I don´t think so, sorry, they are shite. Tell me a freewheel that's better, other than the discontinued version?
LiamWood!
I've never had troubles with a tensile 60 click, 3 years old and an Eno which is about 6 years old now. Both never skipped once.
ghostrider88
At this point I would say most of the freewheels are better, they might skip more, but most likely their pawls/outer shells won´t break after few weeks/months. If you used sl springs in other freewheels like try all 108.9 or rockman I believe they would be the same as original SL´s were.
Mark W
I've never had troubles with a tensile 60 click, 3 years old and an Eno which is about 6 years old now. Both never skipped once. Really? My Eno was pretty dire. It was "OK", but I had to replace the pawls fairly frequently because it just kept skipping and gradually chipped them away. The engagement never really felt that positive either. It was a massive step up from the Dicta freewheel I had been using, but yeah, it's still not as good as most of the 108-click freewheels out now. At this point I would say most of the freewheels are better, they might skip more, but most likely their pawls/outer shells won´t break after few weeks/months. If you used sl springs in other freewheels like try all 108.9 or rockman I believe they would be the same as original SL´s were. It's interesting how the theoretically lifespan of Echo SLs seems to gradually diminish as threads go on. Starts off as a few months, dips down to a month, and now we have a new winner with "Weeks" being added to the list. Good to see the strive for factual accuracy on Trials-Forum is as strong as ever. This concept of 'batches' of freewheels is interesting too. It reminds me of when Rusevelt started the rumour that Echo SL outers were made of aluminium, and I had to speak to quite a lot of people on the phone asking if it was true, and saw it repeated on here too. The time frames you're all using for when the big bad Echo freewheels started being made and when they apparently started to decline seem to vary, or indeed just not actually be stated at all. For what it's worth, the volume of SLs we sell compared to the number that are returned is still about equivalent (or in comparison to some brands is actually more favourable) to the 'problems' people have with other freewheels. I'd imagine that from the outside this number might seem distorted, but SLs are without a doubt the most commonly used freewheel out there so it's hardly surprising that there seem to be more that are breaking simply because there's a higher percentage of them out there. That's why in threads like this there's the "Oooh, my friend broke his after 4 seconds of use" stories yet there are still people replying saying that they have no issues with them. No doubt that'll be dismissed instantly as some form of pro-SL propaganda, but to be honest I'm long past the point of caring now. Here are a couple of other rumours you can feel free to pass off as your own and perpetuate: - Echo SL freewheels aren't as good as they used to be because Echo decided to save some money by making the pawls thinner which is why they all break now - Echo SL freewheels aren't as good as they used to be because Echo decided to save some money by making the springs out of discarded Monster Energy Drink cans, bought wholesale from recycling companies at a reduced price - Echo SL freewheels aren't as good as they used to be because Echo decided to save some money by making the core out of the compacted coffee grounds thrown away by Starbucks
ghostrider88
I would say the pawls breaking might have something to do with heat treating process in connection with higher tolerances for other parts of the freewheel, My newer SL was all crooked and egg shaped. Well if that was the case why didn't you send it straight back and get a new one under warranty! I'm also sick of all this SL 'Talk' i'm not the smoothest rider, and i don't go easy on the drive-train and my SL didn't once click out of tune. I believe the people who have problems with the SL are the people who don't bed them in properly and just ride them hard from the first ride.
