Sam Song
I have a worn out Continental Kaiser with no center knobs and pretty worn out side knobs. I was just going to bald the tire for looks and for experimentation. What is the best way to make the tire bald? Angle grinder?
Jake.
I used an angle grinder and it was fine, some people prefer to use something a little less aggressive although tyres are tougher than they look.
Sam Song
Okay with the angle grinder, - Can I use a cutting disk? - I would grind it fully inflated and installed on my bike right?
isitafox
Cutting disc won't work and yes
Blake
Use a flappy disk on an angle grinder It's best to do it with the tyre on the wheel but the wheel off the bike, as it stops rubber getting stuck all over your bike.

Muel
Seems as good a place to ask as any, but why do people remove all the tread from their tyres? I used to cut alternate knobbles off the edge of mine, but that was to make them grip edges better and shed a bit of weight. Surely removing all the tread just reduces how much grip you have, apart from on completely dry, clean surfaces?
ogre
They feel dead bouncy. The grip is actually very good. Jake.
A metal cutting disc or stone cutting is fine, I did it to my creepy crawler when it was on the bike fully inflated. Completely bald tyre means the tyre will feel quite bouncy, it tends to wrap round objects better and it saves weight. I see far more mod riders doing it though, I'm not doing it to my stock just yet but when all the middle knobbles have worn I will.
