butterztrials123
What are the advantages of upgrading from a 24-18(rear freewheel) to a 18-12(front freewheel) gear ratio Edited March 8, 2013 by butterztrials123
shercofray
What sort of riding do you do is the first question?
isitafox
Better ground clearance, better weight distribution, lighter to name a few.
cai
The only downside when changing to a smaller sprocket setup is you'll be putting more stress on your chain, making it more likely to snap. Change it every few months to avoid this.
dann2707
Better choice of freewheels too?

dann2707
Explain??? I have no idea where I got the idea from that the rear freewheel was a different direction thread to a front freewheel.

cai
You were kind of right in that the lockrings on Tensile and Eno freewheels tend to unscrew themselves when they're on a hub, but are okay when run on the crank arm.
dann2707
I think that's where I got it from, cheers Cai
dezmtber
somtimes the tensile unscrewes on the front aswell? on the way to blackpool my rear wheel caught the wind on the bike rack and set off spinning all the way ther all 70 miles when i got there my tensile was open and lost loads of internals. moral there use strong locktite on the lock ring not the medium blue stuff. Revolver
Moral there tie your wheel to the bike rack with an extra piece of cord.
CC12345678910
18-12 is a higher ratio (harder to pedal) than 24-18. once this starts to feel 'right' again, you'll probs (almost certainly) never go back. If you wanna try on the cheap, put a 16t on the back making 24-16. This as close to 18-12 you are gonna get without committing fully. This maybe? i know it says coming soon but give RnR a ring to be sure, stuff is often 'in but not up'. Give it a go!
butterztrials123
If i go to 18-12 do i have to get a new chain?
Mark W
Not really - just take a couple of links out. If it's old it might be worth getting a new one just to be on the safe side though - chain snaps suck.
butterztrials123
do i need one of those chain-breaker things?
