kjd4000
Hi guys Finally bought a 20" gu at the weekend for a bit of fun. Not ridden trials properly for about 10 years and always rode 26". Never ridden a 20" before, but after having a little go on it today feels quite good. Getting back into the swing of it quite fast. The gearing however seems really light. I'm running middleburn cranks 22t chainring and 16t freewheel. After searching the forum the general status seems to be 18 15. I assume if I changed to a 20t chainring this would be better but would it really make much difference? Thanks in advance for your replies. BradJohnson
Gear ratio for a mod is 18:12. Edited March 4, 2013 by BradJohnson
Danny00135
18-15 is normal for 26" But 20" the norm is 18-12. Edit: Damn you brad you sneaky little sausage!! Edited March 4, 2013 by Danny00135
kjd4000
That's helpful, thanks guys. What make of freewheel would you suggest? And particular ones to steer clear of?

Danny00135
Echo SL 108 click, nothing less! I'd be weary of this, They used to be incredible freewheels back when they were silver, but the black ones can be snap happy, Seen a few cases.. Mine died this evening :'( fixable though.. kjd4000
Just had a look on tarty and it says the echo so only comes in 18t that's bigger than my current freewheel?
Danny00135
you're better off (going to be pricey) Getting a 12t rear screw on sprocket, a new set of cranks and a freewheel to go on the front. otherwise you're stuck with your *unusual* ratio :/

My black one (referring to the freewheel Dan!) was 10 months old when i sold it on the echo a few weeks back, it didn't skip once, and it rode it hard at least 6 times a week!
kjd4000
So why are people advising an 18t freewheel?

Mine died tonight after a year and a half: video of it dying (end clip you can hear it skipping): So why are people advising an 18t freewheel? Front freewheel, Freewheel screws on to the crank, 12t rear sprocket, gives you an 18-12 ratio Edited March 4, 2013 by Danny00135
kjd4000
Oh now I understand. So what sprocket would you recommend? I suppose it doesn't really matter does it? Best place to get them from?
Danny00135
Either Tartybikes or Trialsaddict... Sprocket you get what you pay, never seen a sprocket die before, shouldn't really matter
kjd4000
Sweet, so if I were to sell the middleburn cranks and bash ring what are they worth these days?
Danny00135
Length? ISIS or square taper? Condition of splines+threads? I sold my ones for £30 but they were scratched to hell with slight spline damage. By the look of yours I'd expect you'd get more.

ooo
18:12 will seem even lighter than 22:16! 22:18 is about the same as 18:12. I agree with other guys get 18:12 on there, it feels really good.
trialsiain
What length of cranks you got on
kjd4000
Pretty sure they are 175mm would that make a difference?
Danny00135
175 on a mods a little unusual, that's why it feels too light.. get some 160/165s on there Edited March 5, 2013 by Danny00135
kjd4000
Hmm, so if I bought some cranks that would take a freewheel. Could I use the 16t freewheel I have on my rear wheel already. Then buy a 14t screw on sprocket for the wheel? Would that work out?
