BradJohnson
Welcome to the forum. Taking your front disc brake off and replacing with a hydraulic won't be a problem. As for the rear brake, you can get something called and EVO 2 adapter kit, this would enable a magura to be used on the rear. I would recommend upgrading the pads to something like TNN LGM/ TNN ADM pads and also grinding your rims using this guide http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/media/guides/maintenance_rim_grinding/m2.html The cheaper option would be to grind your rims and upgrade you Vee brake pads to TNN ADV's or LGV's and that would make your brake work really well. HippY
I started wth Vees as a beginner, and because of my rapid skills I was on a double hs11 hydrolic rim brakes, now wtha front hydro disc brake. There is no such a big difference if the V have nice pads and if you are a beginner. If you could, stay with cable brakes because they are cheaper and easier to maintain and more simple than hydro brakes. There is no such a big difference between them, as a beginner i can say that, and if they will not be enough for you, then you will have the hydro, what can perform better in extreme situations, but more expensive and difficult. Danny00135
You can actually get just as much if not more power with a vee brake Like Brad said, LGV pads or ADV pads and a good rim grind and you'll be laughing. The reason Hydraulic rim brakes have such a massive reputation in trials is because back in "oldskool" days there was a much wider range of pad for maggies, this isn't the case any more and there are a lot of people who run vee brakes because they prefer them Not trying to tell you to keep your Vees just giving you some options

Anyway, to answer the original post if I were you I'd probably just upgrade the front brake caliper to a bb7 cable disc as they are stupidly powerful and cheap to pick up. As for the rear just upgrade the cable to a linear slick and get some decent vee pads and a grind. A well set up vee can be a lot better than a magura!

More selection of pads for maggies than for vees.. or so I've heard
isitafox
Bout the same, maggies you either had magura blacks, magura koolstops or magura green frogs. Not sure about vees but I know they did koolstops as I had them so there were at least 2 options.
Luke Dunstan
I would make sure the brakes you already have are set up correctly. As you're new to this, save yourself some money and try setting up the brake first. Also clean your rim, and make sure the pads are aligned correctly. Rich J
Yeah, no amount of changing pads will change a poorly set up brake, just keep adjusting and riding until you find it feels good.
Blake
The cable disk that comes on the front of an onza bird is LETHAL. Keep it.
