Ash-Kennard
having trouble setting up external speakers. the tv is a samsung 43" PDP D450 (manual) and the dvd player is a panasonic SA-HT80, ive connected all the speakers up, and it plays CDs and DVDs fine, but i cannot get the speakers to play what is on the TV or my computer which is connected via VGA cable as there is no HDMI port. i have a scart socket on the television as well as the individual audio and video ports, tried with the RCAJ adapter, nothing... connected it all up in the individual ports and it plays. an ideal situation would be for the speakers to be able to play sound from the laptop and the tv without having to switch over to an have channel. i have also tried switching to external speakers through the samsung device, but nothing happens, i just lose all sound. it seems to know it is there, but there is nothing to click to say that is the device i want the sound to come through. very weird. i have never tried connecting surround sound to this tv before, so am a little unsure about what i am doing. PS the dvd player and speakers are about 10 years old but 1000W ish haha some help would really be appreciated
Revolver
Are the speakers plugged into the DVD player or the TV?
JD™
In terms of the computer, you won't get any sound through a VGA cable, you'll have to use a separate cable as well for sound. I just use a 3.5mm jack cable from the headphones/lineout on the pc to the linein on the TV.
Ash-Kennard
Are the speakers plugged into the DVD player or the TV? into the dvd player. all done correctly as far as i know, checked it in the manual several times In terms of the computer, you won't get any sound through a VGA cable, you'll have to use a separate cable as well for sound. I just use a 3.5mm jack cable from the headphones/lineout on the pc to the linein on the TV. i actually managed to buy a 5m vga cable with a separate line for the headphone jack. so like 2 connections in 1 wire, so i already have sound fromt he laptop to the tv. but now i want the speakers to play the tv regardless of whether the laptop is attached or not
Revolver
I'd've thought it'd work if you plugged the speakers into the TV, and the DVD player into the TV normally. Then you need to do like JD said with the 3.5mm jack.
eskimo
You obviously didn't read the manual correctly http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/SCHT80.PDF Page 11. Note: Audio output through line out is only for radio and discs, not from other sources connected through line in/ aux. Either update that dvd player or just play with cables every time you switch. Depending on your speaker setup you could just run it from the various audio out on the tv. It won't support surround but from the looks of it neither does that dvd player. JT!
Do you have the DVD player connected via HDMI? If you don't you're going to have to connect an audio out port from the TV to an audio input on the DVD player. If you do have it connected via HDMI then you need to go into the settings on the TV and set it so that you're outputting the sound down the HDMI rather than the TV speakers. isitafox
It can't be done unless you want to permanantly have the audio playing via the dvd player in which case you'll need to run a lead from the headphone socket in the rear of the tv to the TV Audio in connections on the DVD unit as shown on page 10 here. You should be able to pick up a lead with dual audio to a headphone connection from any decent computer/home audio store. EDIT: Says in the instructions that audio and headphone volume are controllable independently so it might still work but you won't be able to get 5.1 surround from the TV unless you get a newer DVD player with an optical input. eskimo
Forgive my stupidity, clearly too tired, yeah you're right that's the copy protection bullshit. If you say it's worked using audio out from the tv through the dvd playing to the speakers previously then it's your TV, the TV ports, or your cables. To test your TV/ port, use a RCA to 3.5mm or RCA to 3.5mm splitter and then into a speaker. Also make sure them cables are pressed in all the way. You've done it before as you said, so it's all possible. EDIT: Says in the instructions that audio and headphone volume are controllable independently so it might still work but you won't be able to get 5.1 surround from the TV unless you get a newer DVD player with an optical input. Just a heads up, ideally you should always go from the source rather than through the TV.
isitafox
You've lost me? Simple answer is you won't get surround sound from the tv without using the optical output which won't work as your dvd player isn't compatible. Other option is headphone jack to rca splitter going to the l and r inputs on the dvd player which will just give basic stereo
