trials hoe
wheels off, in a separate box. forks and bars off, wrap everything in a shit load of bubble wrap and pack well so stuff cant bounce about, duct tape is your friend here . send as a consignment (2 packages as the same shipment), that was how i sent the full bike i posted a while ago and the consignment cost no more than if it was all in one box. that was a 24 though, so you may be able to get it all in one box with the wheels being smaller. AndrewEH1
Go to your local bike shop and ask if they have any cardboard bike boxes spare, they usually chuck these out at the end of most days. Depending on the size of box you get you might need to take a wheel off, take the front off. Take your handlebars/stem off but leave brake levers on. Put handlebar/stem assembly beside the bike when you put it in the box. You might want to take the forks off too, remember to zip tie, or a bit of string, through the head tube to avoid parts of the headset and spacers to get loose. Pedals off, wrap these up and remember to put them in the box before you tape it up. Once everything is inside the box you might need to add padding, so get any spare packaging, might be worth asking for two boxes from the bike shop, and pad it up. Luke Rainbird
No need for 2 boxes, you'll get it quite comfortably in one. Rear wheel can even stay in on occasion, dependant on your courier's requirements. Tyres down a little, spin the fork and remove the bars/pedals and pad everything out well with bubblewrap/etc and you're golden

TrialsRob
I've had hundreds of used bikes sent my way (no exaggeration), and the above is certainly sound advice, I would say not to sweat it too much though. Some of the bikes I have received looked like they were packed by a mental patient but none of them suffered anything more than small items going missing (headset bearings, pedals etc) or minor cosmetic damage wheel axles coming into contact with frames. One bike sent to me was literally complete, fully assembled, wrapped lightly in bubble wrap. Imagine a bubble wrap monster lightly jizzing on a bike and you've got it.

eskimo
Tyres down a little, It's not going internationally And for the love of god, don't have tape stuck on the frame! Check the girth before sending, think it's 3m max. Weight will also increase more than you think from packaging.
Luke Rainbird
Tyres down gives you an extra couple of inches, which you may not need but I appreciate the additional help
