How Original
My friends Dad got given this frame (saved it from a visit to the tip) a few months ago, he had the intentions of building it up, and then using it on trails etc... But he just never got round to it, so he's said if I want I can buy it off him. I've been interested in getting a mountain bike for a while, so it could be a good opportunity to get a cheap but decent frame as a starting point. Problem is, we've no idea what year it is, or the size, or the value. So just hoping someone on here can identify the year, and then I can have a gander round for some bits and bobs for it and see what the total cost would roughly be. Sorry it's not the greatest picture in the world either :$ Edited February 10, 2013 by How Original

monkeyseemonkeydo
Looks about 19" maybe (easy to check...) and worth maybe £30.
How Original
Would it be worth getting bits for or not really? I don't want to spend like £1,000 on something then not enjoy it, so want to just start out as cheaply as possible and go up grisedale etc... And see how I like it... Put a bit of weight on over winter and want to lose it Edit: I wouldn't need loads of bits actually either, already got spare 26" innertubes and tyres, he said the shocks may need a rebuild, so could maybe get a rebuild kit for those, then just stuff like grips/seat/chain etc... dezmtber
The forks won't work.well and frame won't be far of breaking/ corroding. Better of buying a 29er hardtail new or 2nd hand

Better of buying a 29er hardtail new or 2nd hand What makes you say that? The guy who gave it to my friends Dad had it for about 5 years merely as a back up bike, but as he barely used it, he took some bits off and then was chucking the frame away, so at least for the past 5 years it's barely moved lol. And it hasn't lived outside, that's just where the picture happened to be taken Not too bothered about forks as I could buy some. But I don't want to spend like £200-300 doing this frame up when I could probably get something reasonable second hand already built lol. Edit: Also, would someone possibly recommend me something for around the £300 mark that would be decent on trails? I don't mind buying second hand either, so if someone knows of something that's a bit more expensive brand new, I could still have a look for it second hand Edited January 30, 2013 by How Original

dezmtber
Just for your info we offer test rides on 26" and 29" bikes and 95% of people who tested both bought a 29" its not just because we want you to buy one. I don't know anyone who rode 26" who hasent said 29" what's the point. Then they ride one, I work with 3 elite and master xc riders who all hated 29" bikes, after a test ride on a orange giro and Camber 29. We now have 3 riders all owning 29" bikes. They all had 26 options. Dh bikes will be using 650b Xc bikes are staying 29"

CurtisRider
Why anybody would want a bike that was so clumsy and weird looking as a 29 is beyond me. I appreciate the rolling benefits but for tecnical stuff they are gash, and we all know thats the best stuff

monkeyseemonkeydo
Interesting. Still think they look stupid. I'm sure they function great in a lot of circumstances but they do look odd.
