dannytrialskid
I gave my wheel to my local bike shop to sort out my broken spokes. I supplied them with the black spokes you can get from Tartybikes for a 26" wheel. They rang me saying the reason 2 spokes spanned were because the hub is drilled to 3mm and the spokes are 2mm, they said they can either build it like that or they can order washers in and charge me more money. What should I do? I just didn't know whether there were supposed to be a difference or not and they didn't know because it's a trials wheel or whatever? Any help would be great

craigjames
Get your bits from the shop, like Ali said get a guide off the net or something and take your time over building it yourself. Save money, gain a sense of achievement and learn a skill
Jake.
Haha wow that sounds silly, if it's double or even triple butted then a part of the spoke will be narrower. Did you try doing it yourself before giving it to them? If you don't want to do yourself, give it to a guy called Darren I think, top wheel builder in England and he's in Worthing I believe, I'm sure Paul gets his wheels built by him. FamilyBiker
in some cases the spoke holes are 2.8mm instead of 2.5(wich is normal). the spokes head digs a little deeper into the flange hole and the bend sticks out more then normal on the other side, causing it to stretch and eventually crack washers=good idea Edited January 26, 2013 by FamilyBiker

Ali C
well, I've built upwards of 50 wheels with those spokes and those hubs in my time at Tartybikes and I've never experienced or heard of any issues. I agree that if the spoke is going to pull though then some washers will help, but that's very unlikely with that combo.

FamilyBiker
i had this only when lacing classic road bike wheels, when the hubs(miche, campa in particular) had those "tapered" flange holes, and the customer wanted 1.8mm spokes though. just thought this could be a case in wich it works. no offence intended ali Edited January 26, 2013 by FamilyBiker
Ali C
no sorry I wasn't being offended it's just from my experience of that hub and spoke combo that washers are not needed.

dezmtber
The spokes are steel once the head beds in and the angle is rebent the spoke tension drops a lot. And loose spokes will rattle and rub the angle part and eventually snap yes, so just retension the wheel a few times while it beds in or use the washers. Both of you are right, Ali probbably checks his wheels often. And gets no problems. Same as I do. I have never had a spoke snap in wheels I own and keep tight I am sure anyone else who looks after a good build will say the same. For customers wheels I use the washers because they wont check the spoke tension enough
dannytrialskid
You've dropped your wheel at a shop to replace 2 spokes? No. sprocket was as on tight and didn't have any tools. They said they would take it off for free. And then they looked at my spokes and hub and told me that.
