onzatrip
Morning peeps I've just acquired a lovely mk1 inspired and the gearing I've got is 18-13 now I've been told that I don't need a tensioner but when I set it up turns out she does. Is this down to different chains and stretch or am I just unlucky and have to use a tensioner Thank
isitafox
You need a tensioner on a mk1, get a spole wrapped round and you'll be away!
monkeyseemonkeydo
You might be lucky for a while with a new/stretched chain but really you'll need a tensioner. I initially ran my mk1 with a 74Kingz (Heatsink these days I guess) and currently run a Rohloff on my 2011. Spoke tensioners depend on your setup really. I had a look at putting one on my Pro2 setup and couldn't really see it working as everything's a bit tight.
Mark W
I had 18:13 and ran it with a spoke tensioner, then went for 23:16 which I seem to remember was alright without one. That ratio was a bit more attainable back when Trialtech did the 23t screw-ons though...
CC12345678910
And tensioners are not all that bad any way. the mk1 was designed with a 'K' hanger on purpose, meaning a hanger could be found pretty much anywhere. 'K's are used from anything (but not everything) from an apollo in hellfrauds to my T-rex (but fortunately not my mk2 fourplay, the custom inspired ones are much better) and your 4play and back again. I rode past an abandoned kids bike with one on last week, but left it cos it might have been little timmy's xmas presie. You'll be fine. AdamR28
the mk1 was designed with a 'K' hanger on purpose It's a Kona style hanger actually, but its really popular too (and stronger than a K hanger)
ooo
If you really want to go tensionerless its possible, I think this is sean watsons old bike running 18-14 tensionersless http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/4527857/ Also I use one of these may be helpful: http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/chains/tryall_halflink/c7p11118.html

AdamR28
Ah no, it's cool, just mentioned it in case someone went and bought some K hangers and they didn't fit! Erm, I try, but brain is getting full

monkeyseemonkeydo
I did not know you could specify what site Google searches in. Most useful- cheers Ad!
AdamR28
Good innit! I was well impressed when I found that out, it's usually much better than the internal search engine on any forum.
isitafox
Weren't the mk1 stays 385?? According to that spreadsheet you posted Adam running 18-13 gives you 384 so there must be the possibility of running without a tensioner no? Mark W
They were 385, yeah. I ran 18:13 and just had the tensioner there to add a tiny bit of tension to it to keep it sweet.
