so i got some crank bolts off Dave Barrat today, appreciate it Dave! but they wont screw in, my old ones did exactly the same and stripped, i dont want to strip the new ones, and they will still not go in? i have used copper grease, cleaned the thread in the bottom bracket bracket, all threads look fine, any one have any solutions? i dont want to waste another set of crank bolts!

I have no idea how thats possible.. unless you have a BB that has an odd thread...

Have you tried simply screwing them into your BB without the cranks on? If they don't go in then it's the wrong thread.... I always thought it was universal :ermm:

yeah i took the cranks off and tried it, and they are the same crank bolts as what ive had before :/ should i clean the threads a bit more with a wire brush or something?

how did the old ones strip? did they spin in easy 'till they went tight, and then strip? or did you have to force them in like they were cross threaded?

i just screwed them in and you could tell something was wrong, they shouldn't be stripped/cross threaded because the other day i just took them out to get some borrowed crank arms off and to put some other ones and, and they wouldn't go in, just took the thread off half of the alloy crank bolts, they started to strip when i tried putting them in, maybe the start of the thread has gone in the bottom bracket spindle or something?

just having some random shit on the threads can be enough to cause a stripped bolt, are there no bits of the stripped bolt threads lurking in the bb axle threads?

using the echo bolts in an echo bb?

pics would help :)

edit - you could have started the bolts off crossed, would explain why they where tight right from the first turn. alloy bolts shouldn't ruin a steel bb's threads though.

that's taking threads off the end of the bolt dude, it looks like the threads on the end of it are gone too meaning it won't have any way of starting to turn in the threads of the bb. do you have a tap you could run down the bb threads? might be able to rescue the threads of the bolt, snap a pic of it as a silhouette with a light behind it so the threads are visable.

yeah i know and no i dont, i dont have any steel bolts that size either to run down the thread

Looks like bb threads to me?

the threads look fine though :/

ignore this I made an oopsie..

i can at first, like a little bit, and no it isn't doing that, :/

It may be worth tracking down some steels bolts from a friend just to clean them up - there's not much point in potentially laying waste to another set of alloy bolts. Having said that, if you tap the cranks on further with a mallet/hammer and block of wood first that'll mean that the crank bolts will have more thread contact so should be less prone to stripping. Plenty (plenty!) of grease will help get them going too.

i tried the block of wood thing when i rang tartybikes, and that didnt work either, but then it was too late to ring them back about it, ill try, i think the bolts are 14 or 15 mm

I had the same problem . My zoo piranha came with echo press fit bb and echo alloy bolts . First time I took them out to replace the bearings they refused to go back in and started to strip the ends of the alloy bolts . The threads in the bb are fine . The bolts just seem a little soft material wise .

My fix was a lot of pressure on the bolts. You really need to push hard and straight while gently turning . They will eventually grip the good thread just past the stripped bit and go on easy after that . Have to do this every time I need to put them back in but it works . Hopefully yours will be the same
