isitafox
Anyone know any good free programmes for doing this as apparently I have a corrupt key in mine and need to clean it asap
Muel
CCleaner has a registry cleaner, gives the best results I've found. I also used Eusing Registry Cleaning for a long time but it's too brutal IMO.

dann2707
Ive just done mine after reading this thread. What will it have benefited me? I had 572 issues.
tomturd
How do you know you have a corrupt key? Not that I expect anyone under the age of 50 to fall for it, but watch out for spyware that claims you have non existant issues/viruses that need to be fixed immediately! isitafox
It's my mums spare laptop, we've borrowed it as ours is old and knackered but just today it wouldn't start up then when I finally got it going it kept crashing and doing the old blue screen memory dump thing. Then on startup I kept getting the option of attempting to start normally or run an error scan, found problems which it first said it couldn't fix and then maybe the 3rd time (after it crashed a bit more on restart) I read the scan report and the only thing that had shown up was a registry key problem. Started really slowly after that (took about an hour to fully load up) and said that there was a problem with NET framework which I repaired and security essentials wouldn't load properly so I uninstalled and put ad aware on. On the restart after installing it crashed again so I just did the registry clean and now I'm hoping it will be sorted, gonna try a restart and see what I get this time. Cannot wait till we can afford a decent tablet!
isitafox
Laptop is absolutely goosed now, when you startup you get presented with a choice between going to startup repair to fix an error or startup normally and both do absolutely nothing. Also burnt a copy of windows 7 ultimate from the forum muel suggested in another thread and even that won't load up. As much as I'm dreading it I think a fresh install is required
Muel
Certainly sounds that way dude. If you can get the disc to run then there should be a repair option though. Does it already have W7 ultimate on it? The site I linked to is only the ISOs, you still need a licence. I'd try getting whatever it has on it already (Unless it came with ultimate? Which isn't very common) and running the repair option. If it's not booting to the DVD, try entering the BIOS and reordering the boot priority. omgnoseat
If you need to recover any files, I can recommend using ubuntu. You don't have to install it, you can simply boot from cd/usb (cd is easier though) and transfer your files to external storage Saved my life when my windows installation was f**ked. isitafox
I think it had home edition on originally and the it guy at derby uni put ultimate on when he changed the hard drive for my sister. The only things that I'm bothered about losing is my 30 odd gig of itunes music! Was a right pain in the arse to transfer over

isitafox
Yeah I do hate it but I guess I'm stuck unless someone knows something that'll sync with an ipod?
monkeyseemonkeydo
I just use sharepod. Means I can leave all my music as mp3s and it doesn't f**k around with the file name or properties like iTunes does.
Danny
Or just tell itunes not to 'manage' your library
monkeyseemonkeydo
Or just tell itunes not to 'manage' your library But why does it default to that and why would it ever be sensible outside of Apple's weird world to mess around with your customers files so much? Just really bugs me.
isitafox
Still struggling with this but I've almost sorted it. Finally managed to boot it with the iso I burned and run check disk from the command prompt, took almost an hour just to get the check started as it's running super, super slow. Been scanning for almost an hour now and still at 4 percent though it has found 4 unreadable file record segments on the hard disk. Will they be repairable or is it game over??
