It's different things for different customers.

Some people come in with no preconceived idea about what they're expecting from a car salesman, and those people always give 10/10 on the customer feedback reports and generally get the best deals because you just chat to them about the car and tell them what it costs then ask for a close.

But when you get the nobheads come in who think that all salesmen are the same and that we're just robots who spout shit out to line our pockets they're just difficult to get on with compared to decent "people people" as I call them. They just require more work.

The only kind of salesman that I can't stand is the type that tries to sell something that clearly isn't what I need.

Best example of that is the twat estate agent that showed us a property when we were planning to relocate here.

Our requirements were a two bedroom place (House or flat). This guy showed us a "two" bedroom place that would be fine if both bedrooms were occupied by one-year-olds in cots.

He suggested that we could have our bed in one room and all our clothes etc in the other. Actually started arguing with us about why that's not a shit idea and defeats the object of having two rooms.

I mentioned how the place was dark despite all the curtains being open - again he argued about that. It's factual. It is dark. You can't argue this fact.

A decent salesman would have said "OK, clearly this isn't the property for you so let's see what else we have...". Not him, he was intent on selling this dark, overpriced shed. And for that reason, he is a willy.

A few weeks ago I got a significant raise (13%) . This is really only down to minimum wage going up, I was not at minimum wage but I threatened to quit because it de-vauled my wage by so much. I got more of a % raise than the min wagers which is nice, as most people who are working there who were already above minimum wage got a few pennies extra an hour if that.

So I'm happy about that, and means I can allow myself to stick around and hope the same will happen next August when minimum wage goes up a whopping 12.5%.

But on the other side it probably means I can just stick with this job for the next couple of years at this pretty competitive wage, which is a little saddening because it doesn't motivate me to do any better.

The wage on top of the perfect amount of hours, the right time of day for me to work (evenings), the responsibility of being (for 5 hours a week, 10 if an assistant manager is vacation or sick) in completely charge of a massive store, and my experience means I feel very unlikely that I'll be persuaded by anything else to leave.

I dunno how I feel about this really.

Any advice?

Thing is, with my availability, this is literally the highest I can go within the company, and I'm pretty lucky to be where I'm at because the position didn't even exist until the start of last year.

Tru-that.

It's hard to do in some roles, but find something to work on that others cba to do or can't do.

My job I had before moving to Bristol I did that, then when I handed my notice in they asked if there was anything they could do to keep me - I said working remotely, a car, laptop and mobile. They said no, but I knew I was pushing it haha.

I managed to do something similar with mine (though no car unfortuantely!) - ended up spending less and less time in the office, flexible hours and a pay rise largely due to being reasonably good with technology and keen to get out on the road. Almost exactly a year since I left and they still haven't replaced me*

*Poor girl who's left in the office is finding it all mega tough, unsurprisingly. Needs to escape!

What Luke said.

Not to blow my own trumpet, or any BS like that but if I was for any reason fired or left my dealership it would take months for Fiat to get back up and running and hitting target again. Which would cost tens of thousands and f**k up the whole year.

Not because I do anything clever or different to anyone else or because I'm just bloody great, but because the systems are so difficult and time consuming to operate and all the little issues with the job have been ironed out by me to a point that nobody knows how do them. Footfall reports, area sales leakage, SSI bonus, financial clawback rates, target margin and over achievement stocking, unit ordering, AFRL achievement, even down to the basics of what cars we physically have in stock, by being over efficient I seem to have inherited far too much individual responsibility for the daily running of the dealership blah blah blah all these things which would usually be done by a team of administrators but are things I do because I feel like I need control to do my job properly and to not have things going wrong.

Flip side of that. I am a victim of my own success.

I've completed my general sales manager scheme and could apply for internal promotions as a general sales manager, but the company are reluctant to promote me past a brand management role because they know that both jobs would be done half arsed for a 6 month transition period whilst a replacement came in and my responsibilities were redistributed and I stepped up and learned my new role.

f**king BS really, I've dipped out on two promotions for that reason.

I was chatting to Soph earlier (vauguely) along these lines - if there had been headroom to work up to a reasonable salary (even just £30k+) then I'd probably have stuck with it or something similar. Unfortunately the only way I was going to get to/above that threshold was by working a second job too, which kinda defeats to object to an extent. Still, I've now found myself in one of few properly secure careers (for the next 12 years at least, if I want it) with guaranteed progression (to an extent at least) and pay to match. Some brutal drawbacks too, but the compromise works for my current priorities at least and if that changes I can reevaluate. Times are good :)

Wow.

Between writing earlier, and writing now some serious shit has happened.

My boss, (who's job is the one I really want) has been in Tenerife for the past two weeks on holiday. He's a bit of a party boy.

He collapsed in a club on Sunday morning, and has been in hospital for two days and was signed off to fly home. On the flight home he passed out, nobody realised and they had to get him off the plane on a stretcher. He's having a blood transfusion tomorrow morning because he has absolutely no iron in his blood. He'll be off work for months.

Whilst his health is my biggest concern, we've got a really f**king big target to meet this year with Fiat. And in his absence I have done a shit hot job of running the place over the past two weeks and we're three away from target. We'll happily replenish our demonstration stock to hit that, but if we can retail out of it then even better.

My area manager and I have a meeting in Christchurch tomorrow morning which he only told me about at 5PM at the same time he told me the news.

Which probably means I'll get a step up the ladder, even if it is only temporary.

It's almost like fate is with us today, what with the news above.

Mike: Sick - will it mean any/many changes for you?

Jardo: Smash it out the park, could be a massive stepping stone!

To add to this mental web of coincidence, I'm potentially going to be spending a few weeks doing essentially my old job, on my current job's pay and benefits. What the hell is going on?! :D

In the short term, no. In a year or so, possibly.

I know some of the guys that are involved (This company bought out the last company I worked for, so I've been through one of their takeovers already!) - hopefully I can pull some strings.

Bet you glad you reeled it off to me on the phone now, did you take my advice?
