Hmmm, strikes me as a crowded sector really, I seem to get the opinion from that most people feel that web design is the only IT sector worth getting into lately. What's the difference between web design and web system design? Might be worth going self employed ready for XP end support, shit will hit the fan and there will be a lot of money to be made in that... Web Systems Design is kind of an overview type course, it takes in front-end design and development, server-side development, server administration, database design and administration, business shite, project management etc. It's actually a very widely reaching degree, just very badly named... I doubt I'll struggle to get work after Uni, I've got 4.5 years of experience and a semi-decent portfolio (needs updating at some point). I just don't think my degree will be a factor. Pft, I'm tech support and I have no people skills, f**king awesome at faking it though... What you really need is patience and the ability to compartmentalise. The biggest challenge is not getting agitated when customers start throwing their toys out of the pram and have a go at you. Which will inevitably happen... I have an engineering degree and 7 year's experience in non-web IT, and now I'm doing ok as a freelance website 'constructor' (I don't really design much, unless the designers miss stuff out or the customer asks me to sort out functionality using my own ideas, in which case you can show yourself not to just be some dumba'ss who needs spoonfeeding) and people seem more interested in what I can do and have done, not what my education was. I don't regret doing a degree but I think we're fast approaching a time when a degree will mean f-all on account of the fact everyone will have one. And then it'll be down to finding other ways to prove yourself. Degrees in the IT industry have long been replaced with industry specific certifications, on the Web side if things you can still get away with showing your work. Coming from a networking background originally I can say that's most certainly not true for the more systems oriented side of it though. Had I bothered getting mine back in the day I would not have been stuck in helldesk and I would be earning at least twice what I earn now... Other industries are obviously different but what I think we'll be seeing is a shift towards degrees being more relevant for academia, and certifications the taking their place there as well. Yes, you're right there. Before I left the corporate world I used to hear people talking about certification, but I wasn't working for an IT company, so there was no chance of them funding anything like that for me. My work at the moment relies on me having a few good contacts who know me and get on with me and trust me to work fast at a good rate and keep my word. I don't intend to do it forever, but I have to say that the freedom of being freelance is nice. I feel guilty, like I should be writing something angry here... anzo Posted December 16, 2012 Report Share Posted December 16, 2012 Helpdesk is a good way to learn and that's how I did it, this is the problem I find with graduates who are fresh out of uni and think that helpdesk work is below them, when in reality is it the frontline for clients, problems, troubleshooting and often an insight to how the company works which is critical knowledge for incident and change management. If the helpdesk role offers no progression in your career, no chance to manage yourself and make decisions then it's not a company worth working for or you're simply not taking the opportunities or making them happen. Consequently I've had to begin proceedings to suspend my studies for the academic year. That's another several thousand pounds wasted. I'm still feeling pretty sketchy from my accident. Forgetting what's going on and where I am at some points; getting really tired with socialising that's just about conversation. I'm starting to get concerned that my behaviour and problems are going to mess up the relationship I have with this awesome new female in my life. This is all especially frustrating because I made such significant steps in sorting my life out over the summer only to have everything reversed by an arbitrary accident. He admitted he was in the wrong, but hasn't sent me any money and is now arguing with some other member about something completely different. Can't believe he's doing this! New housemate moved in yesterday, get chatting to her, a woman in her 40s. She's run down and riddled with some sort of epic and vile disease, anyway.... Sat down to be social in the lounge as she had requested we watch a film (that's cool I thought), we proceeded to have a get to know you session whilst the film played in the background. All was good, and she then said, 'Do you have any alcohol?', I replied and told her I have a bottle of red, and she screwed her face up and said she isn't a fan of red. Great, more of me! I didn't have any to drink (school night), then she ventured out to go and find some. Comes back with a bottle of white, and drinks. I go to bed and leave her to watching mindless television long into the night. New day, during my pre-work routine I look into the fridge and notice a large quantity of my food has been eaten. Not cool. But hey, it's only food I thought with a slight air of frustration. Then look around some more to notice my bottle of rum, empty in the fridge. Getting more frustrated. Oh, what's that over there? Nothing. The bottle of red next to my bowl of fruit had vanished. Long gone, not to be seen again....I thought she said she doesn't like red wine, they figured when pissed most people will drink anything going. I then left to go to work, sat at my desk in frustration at what has happened. Finish work, get back to the house, put my bike in the conservatory and check the fridge... a bit more food is missing- but hey, it's only food. Get to my room and have a look around. What's missing? A bottle of Champagne I was given as a gift earlier this year. I then filled with epic amounts of anger. How can somebody (especially of that age), be so disrespectful, blatant and arrogant. Some human beings are incredible. I really struggle to understand the motives and mindset of people. If you could be arsed to read all that, thanks.
