Pete.M
I know that feeling. Two years is enough for me, I'm getting out of there mid-september, whether I have a new job lined up or not!
SamKidney
I don't plan on leaving any time soon, he just makes it hard work. My work "year" ends October 13th, and I've only taken a day or two holiday In the whole year. Mentioned that I'll either have to get them in very soon or as its short notice that I would take two weeks and then work the other two, but be paid my holiday pay on top of the weeks wage as per my contract. He denies knowledge of this contract and isn't keen on me taking 4 weeks worth of holiday between now and October. Worked nigh on every single working day of the year without much complaint and this is what I'm met by when I try get what I'm legally entitled to. Jolfa
Yesterday's work moan Today bitch manager had to eat her words and get me in at short notice because somebody had called in sick. What actually happened was somebody quit because the manager is a bitch.
manuel
Ffs I managed to put a crap cat5e cable under the floor to the server. I say crap, it's f**king terrible. I had the choice of two and chose poorly. Now I face the mother of all routing problems, or be content with slowest transfers ever.
JT!
Can't you just use the old one as a means of pulling the new one through?
manuel
Unfortunately no, the way the joists/walls run and the route it has to take means it's pretty much stuck. Gah. Im pissed. I'm also struggling to think of a new route that would work.
JT!
I don't know how much you know about networking and cables, but are you absolutely sure it's the cable?
Luke Rainbird
Ballache, but can you pull up sections of floor and drop in a cleaner run of 2" plastic gutter as a conduit for next time?
anzo
And for what's it's worth, perhaps run a few spares, even if you leave it coiled under the floor in case you need to run more lines in future.
Jolfa
My wonderful housemate has been helping himself to our stuff in the kitchen since we got here, but given that he generally bought the same butter we use (girlfriend can't have dairy, it matters) so we stole it back and I can forgive a slice (or most of a loaf) of bread here and there, I've been pretty passive about it. Drinking a case of 6 nice beers though, is too far Oh yeah, the missus also made a fancy dairy free chocolate cake that cost her about £12 to make, left it on the side under tin foil after eating a bit, he put it in the bin... manuel
Ballache, but can you pull up sections of floor and drop in a cleaner run of 2" plastic gutter as a conduit for next time? Floor is 100% not possible anymore. That's why it's in there - I completely renovated the whole ground floor (in such a way that it can't be taken up without ruining it) new electrics, and plumbing, but just put the wrong cable down. It's deffo the cable - connected a longer cable above ground - speed back to normal. Couple of routes possible - outside, up into roof space along to landing, down inside airing cupboard, down/into stairs and into the under stair cupboard. Or outside along and into hallway (might look messier on outside) through 2 door frames then under skirting(yet to be fitted) and under the stairs. Gaaaaahhhh I really should have checked the cable. I don't even know why I used that one. The one I intended to use was upstairs. (Which does work).
JT!
Cut, stip and put different rj45s on there? That's all I got.

forteh
I'm with JT, strip and replace the crimped ends, mechanical failure will be causing your signal loss and it's probably the first port of call if you have the facilities to do so

Have a tool and some spare ends here if you want them posting down... Just to extra push the point, this is definitely worth it. I've not bought a cable for years since doing them all myself – sometimes you get a dodgy end and they're simple enough to whip off and redo. I haven't once had a problem with the actual cable itself, only ever the ends.
forteh
I had a cable run under the carpet at home, cut a channel in the underlay and routed across a doorway to get from the socket downstairs to the computer upstairs, when I replaced the carpet the cable was royally f**ked, all of the outer sheath was shredded and the core cables unravelled. Still worked just fine
Jolfa
People who don't leave feedback on eBay really f**king grinds me! I rarely do, I buy dozens of items every month, can't be arsed with it What does my head in is people who keep emailing every couple of days asking for feedback!
manuel
Defo worth a shot! Have a tool and some spare ends here if you want them posting down... Yeah - might take you up on that ! I'll pm you if needed thank you! I haven't quite worked out if it could be the ends - I'd have thought nothing at all would be working if there was an issue there? Just really poor cable in 10-15m length?
AdamR28
I think a poor / old / corroded crimp / connection will increase resistance which reduces data transfer rate? I'm not sure, but that's my guesstimation... And no probs, just fire us an email at work, PMs are turned off

As Adam stated, a bad joint in the cable will increase resistance and reduce speed, this isn't going to happen mid cable, it would either work or not. A reduction in speed indicates that there is still a connection, just a poor one - main culprit is the crimps where the wire work hardens and fails from fatigue.
