Depends what 'profitable' means to them in a way - margins in the MTB world seem to be way higher than the trials world, so if they can make more while having to do less work (if you're just buying groupsets, forks, cockpits and stuff from OE suppliers) it's probably simpler.

So I don't see why MTB companies would want to get involved.

Also, trials is split into 2 different disciplines. And within those disciplines there are 2 - 3 different wheel sizes. Which really dilutes an already niche market. If comp and street riders all rode the same type of bike, then it would be a different story and I think that there would be more companies involved.

And that's exactly why the likes of Hans Rey, Jeff Lenosky and Ryan Leech have spent like 90% of their careers riding fairly traditional looking bikes that the general public can relate to. Even Danny Mac seems to be spending more time on his full sus MTBs than on his trials bikes recently (while keeping both the masses and more trials oriented viewers happy).

@monkeyseemonkeydo Plus those 3 are from the era, when trials was ridden on slightly modified MTBs. And Danny is probably fulfilling contractual obligations.

I think it would be both a step forwards and a step back... but if all of trials bikes were standardised to something like an inspired hex (26" wheels and kind of normal looking), trials as a discipline would benefit massively. But that's never going to happen.

I disagree, the problem with trials is even simple techniques take a long time to not even master but get started on so a lot give up early on.

Anyone can jump on a hardtail/full sus and fly down a hill or go to trail centre and have fun and it's an instant pay off.

@isitafox I agree, that will always keep trials rider numbers relatively low. The point I was making was purely on a bicycle production point of view. Bikes under the trials umbrella vary greatly, which means lower volumes of more models. And particularly on the comp side, the parts are too specialist. FFW cranks for example. If a company only had to manufacture a frame and forks, and spec it out with off the shelf MTB parts to cater for all trials riders, it would be a much more attractive market.

I think if they ran comps at downhill and race venues like they used to do for the worlds and had a specific, shall we say "MTB" class then you'd appeal to a greater audience and maybe open the door to more manufacturers.

The problem with trials specific bikes is they evolved with the comps so they needed to be more focused on rear wheel manoeuvres and static moves as the layout of sections changed.

Yeah, it will never happen, as comp bike would have to be made "worse". But I can't see any other way to get big manufacturers involved.

Go back 25 years, when trials bikes were basically small, slightly modified MTBs (Ignoring the mods), there were several large MTB companies with trials teams.

Pretty much solves where I find it went downhill

Simply to get popular riders on a bike with their name on, really. There's no actual interest in trials whatsoever from them.

Which is pretty much the worst thing that can happen as far as the progression of riding goes. It's funny there's still so many people talking about riding a 'relatable looking bike' when it's been pretty clear for a while now that it doesn't really make a huge difference as far as visibility goes. Even Sergi Llongueras went 'viral', got onto various news networks around the world and so on riding his Comas, which is as far away from riding a Norco with shit geo and sus forks as you can get ;)

I should have said that I don't see why MTB companies would want to get involved in producing trials bikes. That would have been clearer. I know why they would want to sponsor popular trials riders, and get them riding their MTBs.

Visibility/going viral and people actually having a genuine interest to do what they see, are two very different things. I've seen lots of things on the internet, that I have no intention of trying. Although I kind of agree, I don't think that many people are turned off from trials riding, because of the way the bikes look.

Yeah, totally - it was more that the 'ride a normal looking bike' guys that Dave mentioned tend to be the ones doing demos and trying to increase visibility that way.

Fully agree that it's not the look of bikes that's the bar for entry, but my point was more that the dichotomy of "Ride a specialist bike and nobody will be into it" or "Ride a 'normal' looking bike and people will be into it" just doesn't exist any more, if it even did in the past.

So today me and my wife were ment to go look at a new(secondhand) car what was advertised for £5,000. So we got ready to go have a look at the car and we receive a message saying that she has taken down the for sale add because she didn't know what to do. She then said that she now wants £6,000 because she has had work done to the car. So I told her I'd rather not spend the extra money on this car and now she has the cheek to have a go at me.

When you've been redundant for 6 months over a very  long winter and an area manager whom was not your boss emails you (send to all i suspect) asking you to fill in the rota for the easter weekend.

F*** You.

The company did me right whist I was employed by them tbf.

Then I had to pay royal mail the unpaid postage on my own P45.

Yep, £2.53 for my own P45.

'Kin pricks.

f**king sellers on ebay, just won a pair of wheels, tyres, disc rotors and cassette for £130 which were for one of my sons bikes. Paid instantly on PayPal then saw a message saying not to as his account wasn't working so I cancelled the purchase. Only realised now that he didn't get what he wanted for the wheels so came up with a bullshit excuse to get me to cancel it. Cünt

Ffs - woke up yesterday unable to bear weight on my right foot. today it’s worse and incredibly painful - just had an X-ray but probably tendon damage. I’m on crutches. Might take a long time to recover. Bugger.5441A735-8432-4B1C-8747-6A0AFF5FB9C1.thumb.jpeg.981b452405664859082271c0e031506f.jpeg

I feel for you! I’m in a similar situation - slipped off my pedal yesterday landing a gap - foot landed heavily on an uneven rock below and bent my foot back towards my shin - ankle is in a lot of pain today - really disappointed as was jut getting a feel for the Hex I have had for the last few weeks. I kept riding on it for about an hour after as had an ankle support with me and it didn’t feel too bad at that time. I have a habit of thinking I can walk things off in my 30’s - I need to start listening to my body more as that seemed to work in the teens but not anymore!

at least you know how you did yours!! I’m in the dark. Just woke up and couldn’t walk.

Yeah I’d be a bit freaked out by that! Is a weird part of the body to injure in your sleep!
