Sounds like a good idea, but it would leave a part of the freewheel where the engagement would take longer surely?

Yes but it will work better than if you leave the two pawls in, it would skip a lot and destroy other two pawls quickly, if you take em out, at least you can have them as a spare ;)

So I bought another one (411/500) some years later and built it to dream spec, one day I'll get round to riding it :)
