showurcolours
Hey guys, so basically just won an auction for an Onza Zoot (2012) at £400 - The bike has only been ridden 3 times and has literally no scratches what so ever, so I'm thinking that's a bargain. My question to you all is, what would you upgrade first? If you've had/have a Zoot, I'd really like to hear what you kitted yours out with. I'm thinking, based on what I've read so far, that new breaks and forks are pretty key? If you have any suggestions, please feel free to make them haha
Mark W
Brakes are pretty much fine realistically. Changing your forks will save you quite a bit of weight, but I'd say changing the bar and/or stem would be a good shout. Some nicer riser bars and a shorter/steeper stem will transform it. Awesome dude, cheers for the input! Will be on the lookout, any websites (other than tartybikes) or particular brands you swear by? I know it's probably personal preference but don't feel I could do too wrong by seeing what everyone thinks I'm like 100% certain that in like 6 months (If I haven't destroyed it by then) that the bike won't even be classed as a zoot anymore aha. Mark W
If you can find some Trialtech High Rise bars either new or a good condition pair second hand you'll be on the right track. A 90x25 or 90x35 stem would be a good one to go with it too. They're pretty common so you can find them on some normal MTB websites too (BBB and System-Ex make some suitable ones that are pretty cheap). The standard bars on the Zoot are about 670g whereas something like the Trialtechs are half that so you'll be saving a decent amount of weight as well as getting some comfier, stronger, better bars on the go.
Blake
make the most of V brakes! get some nice levers, avid fr-5's or sd7's are cheap and cheerful! and maybe a better cable like an odessy linear slick for the back to make it feel better. New pedals would be a bit nicer, but bars, stem and forks are probably the ones you'll notice the most.
showurcolours
Ok, tartybikes sell the trialtech high rise at £50 which isn't too bad I guess and they are 330g, like half the weight! Out of interest, you say 90x25 - 90x35 for stems. Really n00b question now but what does that refer to? I take it the second figure 25/35 is the rise angle? Cheers for your help though dude! make the most of V brakes! get some nice levers, avid fr-5's or sd7's are cheap and cheerful! and maybe a better cable like an odessy linear slick for the back to make it feel better. I have heard it's pretty darn heavy haha Cheers for your input though mate

Out of interest, have you/do you use a brake booster? Was wondering how much difference they actually make Also! just noticed you're from 'down the road' from me near enough, we shall have to hit Portsmouth up one day

I don't use a brake booster as my V is only on the front, and doesn't really flex. A fair few people run them, I think they will definitely help with the feel of the brake. Hopefully ali C will see this thread and shed some light on the subject.
Mark W
In terms of stems, the first number is usually the length in mm with the second being the angle of rise. A 90x25 or 90x35 stem will shorten your front end compared to the standard stem so it'll make it a little nicer for spins, manuals and bunnyhops, and getting that bit of extra rise on there helps bring your bars up which makes bunnyhopping a bit nicer. I usually run a 25° stem as I find it helps keep things at a good height but you still have some length over the front to help out with nose manuals, front pivots and that sort of thing.

showurcolours
Quite alright! Man ! as soon as my zoot arrives il have a better understanding of what really Needs done! Ah awesome. Had the first ride on mine today, such a nice bike but I definitely understand why everyone changes the front haha. . Also, mine does this weird thing when you wheel it, the cranks start to rotate like it's on a fixie...I dunno maybe it needs some TLC and WD40 or something

MikeCottTrials
Front free wheel always does that because the chain is being pushed by the fixed cog at the back and the resistance of the bearings (although not great by any means) is enough to push the cranks round with no weight on

MikeCottTrials
I've changed nothing! But only because it's my birthday next month so I'm just putting up with it until then. Planning on changing the forks, stem, and brake pads. Basically I want mine to bunny easier aside from that I'm really happy with it. <object width="640" height="480"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"></param><param name="movie" value="http://www.facebook.com/v/3463457203786"></param><embed'>http://www.facebook.com/v/3463457203786"></param><embed src="http://www.facebook.com/v/3463457203786" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="1" width="640" height="480"></embed></object>

Suppose it's all just practice though. Will you be running the standard bars then? I definitely won't be, standard Zoot bars are like ~600g, I don't mind the geo of them too much but some lighter and steeper ones will be a treat
isitafox
Trust me the geo of the standard bars is awful, going at it from a what can be afforded first point of view (not saying you are but if I had one again) I'd go for some TT high rise bars first, then sort the forks (I had some 2012 Urbans, not sure how it would ride with Inspired but these were great) and finally if at all the stem. Once you get some different forks on you should have a bit more steerer to play with so you can bump the front up.Not 100% sure as I can't see vids at work but I think in this I have the Urbans, TT bars and a 90 x 35 stem fitted and was the first proper ride on my zoot if it helps

(if you know that is haha) but yeah TT High Risers are first on my agenda, I was going to change stem next (again if you know the geo, that would be awesome) and the forks last. I'll order the bars on thursday then the rest of it will have to wait a while
