Blake
Never come across these before, how on earth are you meant to build them and what are the benefits? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=51246

aener
Love these hubs. Just look so damned cool! Seriously contemplated getting one just for the looks when building up my current bike but the price tag got in the way

Blake
Have you ever snapped a flange? no but i've seen it happen on some trials bikes, and I thought you of all people would of, being the big brakeless rider that you are
aener
no but i've seen it happen on some trials bikes, and I thought you of all people would of, being the big brakeless rider that you are I've never even snapped a spoke since being brakeless - much less a flange. Blake
I've never even snapped a spoke since being brakeless - much less a flange. To be honest that surprises me.
isitafox
Yeah but Flipp's wheels aren't under as much strain if there isn't a brake counteracting against the power from the cranks or movement from the wheels
AdamR28
Seen him ride in the flesh? Shimano did something similar a few years back, the spokes broke fairly quickly which is why they don't do them any more...
N.Wood
Was that the Deore ones that you pushed in and some sorta flap held the spoke in? Was back a few years ago so can't remember the details but I had one and it was terrible. Looked good though. EDIT:
AdamR28
That's the one! I couldn't find a pic. Same idea.

AdamR28
To you Dave - Flipp is HARSH on wheels!
isitafox
Yeah but I wouldn't have thought it'd affect the hub flanges, more just buckle the s**t out of them
AdamR28
Well, the force ends up at the flange via the spoke whether you have a disc brake or not And at least with a disc brake the torque is equally (pretty much) spread between all 16 trailing spokes, whereas a harsh landing only transfers into the few spokes opposite the impact. isitafox
Yeah I understand that just thought that with the rim or hub being held in place by the brake the spokes and flange would be under more stress when you apply pressure to the pedals. It's hard to explain what's in my mind, I seem to be getting worse at this anyway. Must be old age...
AdamR28
I know what you mean In my mind, the torque created by pedalling is insignificant compared with landing a failed 360 down an 8-set though...
isitafox
Aah but that would also be the same if he had brakes
AdamR28
Yeah, therefore brakes have little significance to flange damage. I think? I'm getting confused now Back to work...

Mark W
He's got a point In fairness though, the last few times I've ridden you've been riding pretty smoothly Tree, Simple and Animal have also been doing straight pull/flangeless hubs for a while. For BMX they're good as you don't have a flange to grind/batter the shit out of, and you snap spokes less as they're not exposed to whatever you're grinding as much. Seems Animal don't do theirs any more though... From Tree: ...and Simple:

Revolver
Do you need special spokes for any of those?
