Sam Song
Okay, my three year old Hope trials needs to be replaced. I realized the bb7 that I had on my first bike is even older than the Hope and it is now on its third bike (A), performing flawlessly. So I'm going back to bb7 and I need to make some decision on the lever, between Avid SD7 and ultimate, is ultimate worth it? Sure it might be expensive, but expensive parts usually work and last better and works out to be cheaper in the long run.
ogre
no they're rediculously expensive, buy the magnesium sd7s if you want light+stong, it undermines how cheap a bb7 cable brake can be, you might as well buy another hope for that sort of money. the adjutsment on the caliper and sd7 levers is more than adequate... J.KYDD
The Ultimate V-brakes are sick, but the levers are not nice - the shape of the lever blade is really uncomfortable. I'd go for an SD7 lever 100% of the time
Blake
Just but 10 sd7 levers
narrowbars
I've never really liked the feel of Avid levers + they tend to devlop play fairly quickly (not Ultimate lever) I'd go with a Shimano xtr lever
Ali C
the last ultimate lever I had develoved play really fast, I find the newer style sd7 levers the best out there for both comfort and lack of play, plus the speed dial system is a god send! aener
Another vote for SD7s. I like the Ultimates. Never owned one, but used other peoples'. They're nice, but I think I prefer the SD7, and the pricing certainly accentuates the fact
Ali C
I've never really used the speed dial, what does it do? makes the brake more powerful/adds a bit more squish to the lever (if that's your thing, which with me it is). I always ran my SD7's speed dial almost halfway, if I felt I was getting arm pump, I would dial in the power and not have to pull as hard. Azarathal
I found that dialing them in for power / some squish it'd be a lot harder for me to gap over things / off sharp rocks / rails etc as there was a lot more travel before the pads were off the rim. Sam Song
Alright SD7 it is but How does SD7 levers compare to XTR ones?
Bunta
^ IMO the avids feel cheap and flexy compared to an xtr or even an xt(my preference for the simplicity) I like the shape of the lever better too, ive used the same set of XTs on my last 3 bikes(6 tires worth of riding lol) still nice and tight even though ive smashed them into all kind of stuff

I sold an xtr lever to buy an SD7. Now I feel silly.
