About These Happy Threads...

Greetings

Why is it that you're encouraged to start a new thread, but when it's a happy thread it gets closed? I'm really disappointed about there not being a happy or angry thread, it's made me use the forum less and I feel as though users on here can't bond. Thank god there's still a car thread which has it's own community.

Starting a new thread for no reason is not the answer, it catches too much attention when all you need is to vent a bit. If we were really encouraged to start a thread rather than post in the angry/happy thread, this forum would be a huge mess. Rather like when Davetrials used to start threads along the lines of "what time is it?". Imagine Jardo starting a new thread because he got/did something to his lighter, he's going to get flamed. Or someone else happy with something that came in the post. This is not separate thread material and it better be contained in one.

No doubt this thread will get closed too :(

I'm 50/50 on this subject nowadays. I do miss going and venting in the angry thread, but at the same time did anyone really read anyone elses updates? That was one of the reasons Tom gave for closing them. Ultimately there's status updates either here or on a popular social network if you so wish to go down that route.

I definitely miss using this place as somewhere to say things I might not be able to say on FB though...

Maybe if it wasn't a "The" thread it might stand more chance ;)

I have no say in the running of the forum in that sense (don't want to step on Tom's toes), but have to agree there doesn't seem quite the community feeling that there used to be before. Whether its because of the loss of such topics I don't know, but I for one miss them. (And did read them!)

Why do I want to read about what makes others happy or angry?

Well perhaps not the happy thread, but the angry thread was a good place to discuss minor problems. There's something I'd really like to discuss right now but neither is Facebook the right place (prefer the outsider viewpoint you get here) nor is starting a new thread the right option. The kind of people who replied to the angry thread were the kind of people you wanted views on the subjects you were concerned about. Dan, JD, Luke, Muel, Ben etc. I personally didn't read the happy thread too much, but I did read the angry thread. What makes people angry often needs solving.

The Happy Thread clearly had to go. It seems to be these days, what with Twitter and Facebook, Instagram etc, that something isn't worth doing/experiencing unless it's reported to all your friends online. Why can't people just do stuff and enjoy it? Why do we need to either seek additional validation, or at any rate squeeze some extra value? What makes any of you think that anyone else cares if "My bird is coming round, getting pizza and then watching Batman (Y) "?

Other than that, both threads seemed to just end up as either more posted than read, or just as online councelling. Just as reporting good things won't make them better, having a rant and 'getting things off your chest' won't make the bad things go away.

Do we really need these virtual comfort blankets to cry or wank into?

Well, in an ideal world we'd all be able to work out our problems in some perfect way but sometimes, pragmatically speaking, a quick statement of frustration that evokes a response from others can help. We don't always have access to people in the 'real world' whom we can or are able to express those same problems. Having spent years talking to counsellors one thing that's frequently been stated as helpful in difficult times is articulating your problem in some sense whether it's speaking, writing or whatever. It's just a basic fact that for some it helps. I happen to be one of those people. It may not change the problem but it can alleviate your response to it to some degree.

Perhaps being stoic is your method and that works for you. That's cool but for others it's different.

On a side note, does anyone know where Tom is? He's the only judge I'm waiting on for the novice category of the comp. He hasn't responded to my attempt at messaging him.

I never really cared for the happy thread though to be honest.

I am here, sorry, been reeeally super busy recently, quit my old job one day and joined a startup the next, so my work day doesn't finish at 6 any more.. in fact it never seems to finish. On top of that, I only have access to broadband for 2 nights per week. I'll send you an email now.

I made this doc up when the threads were closed, to try and demonstrate the damage (in my mind) that "the" threads have on the forum - the list is of 25 un-doctored randomly selected sequential topics from 2005, compared to what we'd have nowadays

Here's my humble opinion:

The threads were shut, and some time later, the numbers using TF rose.

IMO, that has f**k all to do with the closing of those threads. If you ask me, it has a lot more to do with the trials community in general growing due to a greater number of demos happening per year, tartybikes continuing to grow, and that scotch bloke doing BMX stuff.

What we know for sure is that overall, 6+ months on, there is a group of 15+ members who hate the fact that those threads have gone. Why not just bring them back? If only to see if the numbers drop and to see if the assumption that the numbers increasing had anything to do with the changes done to TF around the same time.

Or, just make more than 2 people a year into seniors. There are about 25 seniors on a forum with 10,000 members, with access to SMC. However you look at it, that shit is shit. Not even 1% of the forum are considered to be "higher level" members. to be honest I think i should be in there, 6 years and 15k posts show enough dedication. If not, then I must be pissing people off a lot, if so, give me some f**king warns. Last one was a joke by OBM about 4 years ago.
