Pashley26
Is anybody else on here fascinated with it? I've been studying it for years and really enjoy learning about it. I find the German occupation of France from 1940 through 44 the most fascinating aspect of the war. Anybody ever been across to the continent and visited some of the battle sites and memorials? hI-OOPS-CAPS
I enjoy some movies like Where Eagles Dare. My Dad loves ww2 history and has visited many of the memorials. We went to Point Du Hoc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointe_du_Hoc
casualjoe
WW2 comes under the fascinating subject of world history, which is really helpful for understanding WW2 in a wider context. I've visited a few graveyards in France on the way through, there's an awful lot of them

We went to Point Du Hoc. http://en.wikipedia....i/Pointe_du_Hoc Well good, I'd like to go there. I've done quite a few of the Normandy sites, but last time I went I didn't have time to go to du Hoc. Paris has got some excellent WW2 museums; I really fancy a holiday next year driving from Cherbourg across the Normandy sites and up to Belgium via Paris. I think that'd be a rad. Can't see my missus doing it though lol!
RobinJI
I've always had quite an interest in it, I visited a lot of the WWI and WWII sites in northern France and Belgium on a school trip when I was in secondary school, but my memory of it's a little vague. I keep meaning to do a few more trips to historic places, must get around to it sometime. I think the Denge sound mirrors are probably highest on my list at the moment just because of how spectacular they are, and I love crazy experimental science like that, it's just a shame they're completely the other side of the country for me! I find anything to so with submarines pretty intereting too, as my granddad served on a T-class one in the war. A great uncle of mine was a spitfire pilot, and was the first plane shot down over a certain area of France (I can't remember the area right now). The sound mirrors (The closest one's 30 foot round!):
dezmtber
my grandad was in the armoured devision, during ww2, he was at duncurk landings and normandy. if i ever asked him about the war, he just wouldnt tell me a thing. must have been bad
Luke Dunstan
I find it interesting too. Going to tour war sites and places of interest in Europe on the motorbike next summer I think. Would love to visit the Black Forest too! I drive the Missus crazy watching old war documentaries on Yesterday.
RobinJI
That's similar to my granddad, he's happy to talk about the technology, the history of the submarines and things to do with them, but he's never actually talked about his time on them, or his time in the navy in general, and I've always respected that it's probably not something he wants to talk about, so I've never really probed for any more information. SamKidney
Love the technology side of it. Big into the big radial engined monsters the US used in the Pacific theatre. F4U Corsairs give me the shivers when I hear them. The aviation side of it is something Im mostly interested in.

When I'm cruising on my motorbike, and I hum at the same note as my engine it sounds like a fleet of bombers. Yes I know I'm 26.
Muel
Jardo, have you read much about Alderney? I've been there, it's quite an amazing place. Most of the german bunkers and gun placements are still un-touched, and they're all open so you can easily explore them.

I'd love to visit that sort of place, it's just a shame it's so far to get to, I may have to find an excuse to head out there sometime though. The Maunsell Forts are another I'd love to go and see, amazing structures: Jardo, I take it you've been out to all the stuff local to you? The gun platforms at Rame Head as well as the loading 'steps' at various other bits around Penlee spring to mind but there's quite a lot around that area. The sound so good though dont they? haha. I'd quite happily have a journey take double the time of a modern day jet to sit in the cabin of a DC-3 and listen to its P&W's. Im not even old enough to have experienced piston engined propliners/fighters/bombers, but there's something weirldy aweinspiring and nostalgic about them. It's not that far really, flights are fairly expensive though.
Pashley26
Been to a lot of the local stuff yeah, I was lucky enough to see and go aboard the S130 Schnellboot that was at Rame. The only one left in the world which was being restored, I wasn't allowed to take pictures though because it was a National Heritage project I think. I would LOVE to go to Alderney, they have open days on lots of the emplacements don't they? I remember reading a great article about a man being let in to take pictures of everything on his own. Can't remember where I saw it now.
Muel
Not sure but it's worth going if you're into it. Tis a very strange place, I love it though. Not sure about open days though, because it's all open. Or at least, we didn't go to any that were blocked off. I think that legally you're not allowed on any of it, but if you don't get hurt... If you go, definitely go to have a look at the anti-tank wall, it's 100% still in tact and it's amazing to look at lol.
