Dual Disc Advice.

Recommended Posts

Right guys... I'll explain why I need advice, I have never ridden dual disc before. I've used disc on front on 3 mods and on a 24" for a short period of time but never on rear.

I'm now getting another mod, I have a spare front disc brake (hope tech x2 with an avid 160 disc). And I'm thinking of trying it on the rear too... I sidehop to the right so no worries there, and I'm left footed.

My questions are, is it worth the hassle to get dual disc even if I'm riding street mainly? What rear brake would you recommend me? Cheers

I'd say a matching Hope if your budget can do that. If you get it set up perfectly, then they can easily have bite and hold like a Magura. Just have to keep it free from any kind of lubricant/oil, thats the only pain i found but apart from that they're fairly hassle free. :)

There's a pair of hope trialzones for sale on the forum get them you won't be dissapointed

Not gonna spend £200 on a pair when I've got a front one already.

Thanks Sam, how easy is it to get it contaminated?

Hopes are a fanny to fix if they go wrong... got for Shimano Saint or XT, old style lever. never look back again!

I was thinking of a saint, seen a lot of posts from you complimenting it. What makes it better than a hope? And how are hopes hard to fix?

Haha! Hopes, because they are IS mount, require the use of shims to get set up squarely. Saints use pot mount system, so its a case of pulling the lever and tightening the bolts to get it set up perfectly. I also found Hopes loose any form of reliability when they get a tad old. Having owned four different Hopes now, I will never go back. Also having serviced them in work, it just isn't worth it. For the same price as a Hope, you can get a Saint which you can fit, and not even look at for years on end!

Your front hope should sell for 100.

Shimano brakes use mineral oil which isnt corrosive like dot fluid hope uses.

Dot fluid I find is only a problem when manufacturers like avid and formula use magnesium alloys which corrode quicker.

When fixing a shimano problem they supply a complete lever assembly or caliper which you just fit as replacement to the broken one. Problems with shimano are extremely rare.

Hope supply all the parts seperate and are as rareley problem free as the shimanos as they use alloy with no magnesium.

The first sets of hope mono caliper brakes were crap. But the new x2 and trialzone brakes are spot on.

I recommend the saints or trialzone brakes highly. They are both perfect brakes for you.

Your x2 brake will have around the same power on a 203 rotor, as the trialzone on a 140/160 rotor.

Hope techs. I know they are a lot of money but believe me they are perfect. easy to set up, easy to adjust, SO much power and when anything goes wrong you have a lifetime warranty on them so it's mint. I would never choose anything else

Was nearly tempted to go back to dual disks on the mod but chose to go dual maggy instead, I like hopes but I used to find they would be ok one ride and the next crap, they were maintained right too. When they are working right they are a pleasure but for the best and consistent option it had to be dual maggys as much as it pains me to say that because they are a nightmare sometimes but keep the grinds fresh and a good set of pads it's the ultimate set up imo.

Just avoid touching your rotor and obviously don't get it near greasey oily shit. You'll wonder why you ever used to run a magura once you've gone dual disc though.

Oh yeah and I'll give a +1 to Shimano Saints if you can afford them, they really are unbelievably awesome.

Just what I was after, thanks for the help guys!

I don't think I'm going to buy from you as I have about 100-150 limit to get myself some wheels and a rear disc brake if i can find one thats cheap enough, what sort of price does a saint go for second hand?

Shimano lever on Echo caliper front and rear on my 4play and they are both amazing on 180 rotors. Easily as powerful as a maggie even on the rear, definately recommend dual disc as I plan on switching when I get my hands on a rear disc mod frame.

Dual disc won't work to well if that's your budget. I would get a vee brake. Your budget for arear disc only should be £100 2nd hand.

Or £150-200 new that's just the cost of a great disc setup. Anyone planning on using some old thing thete mate is selling for £25-35 quid cuz it eas an old spare lying around, just dont, go out git a vee or maggy . It's not worth while buying cheap disc brakes then coming on here telling us how you got a mono mini or elixir and doesn't hold and you fell on your back n now the bikes for sale to buy a stunt wheelchair.

So here's your options

Vee brake £20-50

Maggy £45-80

Disc £100-200

Look at your budget and make the right decition

A vee on the rear? Lol.

I have hs33 only front mod forks, and a pair of 04 maguras, a 2011 front magura and a hope front disc brake.

If I were to buy a rear disc then I'd get front disc forks and disc wheels, so it is the most expensive option but I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.

And if I did stay with maguras should I use the 04s or get an 2011 pair by just buying the rear brake for one?

Exactly, only the people who haven´t tried them are the ones slating them. They are way to go if you´re looking for best hold every time you need it.

I'm not slating it. All I said was that it seems silly. I've tried a bike with a rear vee and there was hold but no bite, I found it terrible.
