Ben Gosden
I know everyone is advising against it. I still use the quick links. I have no issues using them. I always break chains wheRe I have joined them "the correct" way. I've tried heaps of differently chain breakers with no luck,I don't push the pin all the way out either. I use the kmc 510hx with the joining link included. What's your chain line like? How old is your chain? What's your chain tension like? I like to run the KMC kool, this one i think roughly is around 4 months old but its the joining links. One after the other they are being destroyed and i like to run them at quite a sensibly medium tension enough to stop chain contact to the rear of the frame. KMC Kool Chain without split link. Epic This is the chain i like to run and the problem lies with the split link so due to recommendations i think your right and that this is what i am going to have to do. Never had an issue running a split link for a year, just don't be a mong and fit it properly! Seeing how other people fit theirs and how they run them i think i do fit them properly. Filo
with the tool I posted you can rivete the pins again... but as long as quick links work for you, why bother anyway... I've tried re riveting the chains after the join. I've mushroomed with a hammer, centre punch, chisel. I've even put a small tack weld on join. Basically use what works and keeps you happy, and safe
isitafox
Could we see a pic of your bike with the chain fitted?

It is possible to join them correctly and not have them snap prematurely even using the cheapest and most basic of chain tools. So if you still have a problem with linking chains, you are not doing it right. My last chain snap occured in 2002 I think and I've never used a split link. I also ran a KHE chain for 3 years on about 6 different bikes. Possible? Yes.

I push the pin out, leaving 2 mm inside the plate, I pop the chain out,pop the other end in,line everything up. Push the pin in and watch how it comes through/into the other side plate. Making sure that its central, also make sure I have the same amount of pin sticking out of either side. I don't see how I'm doing it wrong,I can see if the pins aren't line up screwing up the hole, that doesn't happen. I have also ran the khe chain hassle free, also using the split link. I did get a lot of stiff links after 2 months, but no snapping. I've been using the 510hx's for probly 2 years now with a split link and haven't snapped one. I do have powerful legs and a lot of mass behind me,I've just had to find what chains work for me(the very painful way) Edited October 8, 2012 by Filo

Kool chains stretch so much it could be that after a while your split link has normal chain pitch but the other links are probably about as long as a car, so it just rages and snaps? I do have powerful legs and a lot of mass behind me,I've just had to find what chains work for me(the very painful way) of course you are not doing it wrong, but no matter how careful you are, you damage the the pin and the plate - period. This may not be of relevance for most people, who may be lighter or not as strong as you, but in your case it´s enough... With the Rohloff Revolver you could really re revite the pin and I´m sure it would hold up - once I had no spare chain to hand, so I revited every(!) pin on a Kool chain, where after a week half of the chainlinks looked like they would splain every second (something which happend often to me when I was still using Kools). Rode it for another 2 months then... but again, why even bothering when split links work you... (I wouldn´t rund them out of pure paranoia - I have snapped a lot of chains too and let´s say 80% snapped at the quick link... now with 510hx/610hx "Rohloffed" I don´t think about chains until my schedule tells me 10 weeks are over and it´s time for a new one )
Ben Gosden
sure, ill try to find some for you and update soon. that makes sense to me, just buy a new chain, sounds like your running some really old chains and expecting them not to snap? once a single link snaps the chains ready for the bin. Yeah thats shed a bit of light on something i hadnt thought off. Except im not running the chains that long but this could be what's happened. Thanks alot. Kool chains stretch so much it could be that after a while your split link has normal chain pitch but the other links are probably about as long as a car, so it just rages and snaps? I handnt thought of that, but i can see that this is most probably the situation. It makes alot more sense then most other theory's. Thanks.
