Revolver
What does TF know about Sturmey Archer hubs? My getaround bike's rear hub seems totalled now, so I was thinking of getting the Sturmey Archer hub I was intending to get for it a while ago. I can't find out much about them in regards to strength though. I'm not on about tanking it off huge drops, just kerbs and that type of stuff. I want to know if one will handle that. CurtisRider
Assuming we are talking the older ones? They are freaking heavy old beasts, and have a steel shell as well as internals. I have given one similar abuse to what you seem to be offering, and had no issues. The pickup is awful, and you may want to check how many spoke holes the hub has as most seem to be 28 spoke
Revolver
I was thinking of getting hold of a brand spanking new one. Apparently since the taiwanese took over the quality went up. It'd be a 36 hole hub, I've found a rim I can buy now.
JoNnY__Mc
Any links to the hub your on about? I have restored a handful of 70's Raleigh Chopper bikes which use the 3 speed hubs sturmey archer hubs, never had any problems they are easy enough to service and repair. If they are similar to the hubs you are looking at, they can withstand 30 years or more of neglect so I am sure they will hold up to your everyday use. As mentioned - the pickup is shocking! Twitch-119
As long as it's a 3 speed, any other speed and you might as well get the Shimano or SRAM designed one as they perform much better.

It was the s-rf3. The new version of the classic 3 speed jobbie. Shame the pickup's dicks. The other choice was to dig out an eno but I lost mine. Ash-Kennard
if you want a cool hub look for the stealth hubs, they have infinite engagement because of the system the use. can run a normal cassette and are totally silent
J.KYDD
I work for SJSCycles and we deal with Sturmey Archer alot - unfortunatley! The 3 speeds are still by far and away the most reliable hubs they produce. The 2 speed duomatics have been cause for a lot of problems and i'd never recommend one. The 5 speed hubs have been alright, with few problems - although I have heard reports of them slipping in some gears, it seems with these that if you get a 'good-un' then your fine. The 8 speed hubs have been pretty good to be fair, but they compete with the Alfine and Nexus hubs which are better. DONT GET A SRAM GEARED HUB!!! We are Rohloff specialists if you did want to flash some cash.... I can go into more detial, but its easier to explain over the phone if you want to call the shop
Revolver
How much would an S-RF3 be, with 13t sprocket and all the shifting gubbins?
J.KYDD
£92 all in http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/sturmey-archer-3-speed-aluminium-freewheel-hub-with-gear-control-s-rf3-36-hole-prod8162/ Sturmey are incapable of sending out all their hubs with the same shifters and sprockets i'm afriad so there is no guarantee which of each you'll get in the box. You will get A shifter and A sprocket but they may not be the same as the next hub in the delivery! The best bet is to buy the hub, shifter and sprocket you want, and if on delivery it turns out that anything is replicated, just send it back for a refund. Its normally a 19t sprocket and a twist shifter.
