clerictgm
I want to drop from this monument, there are ~1.7-2.2m. Is there a difference if I drop on speed or just do wheelie from the edge? And what difference between landing on rear wheel and on both? Ali C
if you're having to ask then maybe you're not ready? A bit of speed does help take away some of the impact, but it's easy to "dead sailor" and land harshly.
clerictgm
I will try from 1.2-1.5m before, to get it smooth. Edited September 25, 2012 by clerictgm
onza pro series guy
as above if you're not sure if you should land flat or on the back wheel, your probably not ready for it. Try some smaller drops first and try to master dropping off properly (like a peadal kick), straight to back wheel and absorb the energy as the bike touches down. clerictgm
maybe you shouldnt be riding on a monument either. just saying. its a little disrespectful. I mean no disrespect. And there are not so many places to ride in our city.
SamKidney
Still best not to. Some wont take too kindly to it, even if you mean no disrespect.
Carlperkins
also as a side note. you should video your first attempts? that way some brakeless people will be able to give you pointers. and the brake-ful? people can get some free entertainment. It looks as if someone has already been a nob and sprayed some graffiti on it.
clerictgm
Good? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fifXCJYQu2w Way to the edge looking strange because it was terribly slippery after rain! Carlperkins
yeah actually. how highs that? dont look anywhere near as high as that monument. your drops more of a freeride drop where you just bomb it off the edge.. (which you can do on any bike) to get more trialsy have you tried being at a complete stop at the top of the wall and then going? would be more controlled and generally look way better. plus it means you could drop off walls where you dont have a big run out. clerictgm
being at a complete stop at the top of the wall and then going? >how highs that? not enough) I forgot my tape-line today, ~ 1.2-1.3m. Wheelie/pedal kick drop not so good idea on very slippy surface) There was almost as at the rink. That landing feels like on pillow. rocky111
personally I'd say don't bother trying a big ass drop unless your confident at dropping properly, in a very controlled way with a pedal kick, ideally you should be able to make small hops forward with your brake still locked to position yourself perfectly on the edge of the drop. when your a beginner you don't have much to gain from huge drops apart from damaged wrists. I'd tried a big drop before I had the right skills in place and got off lucky with the worst shin dig ever wasn't nice.
clerictgm
with your brake still locked I don't have brakes. Previous 1.3m drop feels very smooth. And the monument height starts at 1.7m. Not a big difference. But you right about control and stability. dngr2self
I'd say you want to be looking at about a 45 degree angle when you land and you should be fine.
Matthew62
He's brakeless so the ol' hoppy-hoppy technique won't be ideal for dropping....... go for the big one, why not! Edit: Doh! Too slow. Edited September 27, 2012 by Matthew62

ULtrialsguy
Just video it so we can enjoy it whether you land it right or not.
omgnoseat
you should watch flips latest video, he drops off a decently heigh container. He pedals of it and sort of "kicks" himself off the edge. I also use this as a rolling dropoff and it feels alot smoother than just pulling a mini manual.
