hI-OOPS-CAPS
I got new forks and the steerer tube is shorter that the previous. I want to make it work however. Its an XC bike. I asked CRC about components that take up the least vertical space on the steerer. I was told The headset http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24980 And the stem http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=47923 Running a shim between the two. I've just realised how push for space I am. I need to measure, but I need to clarify the dimensions first. In the description of the headset - "Stack height 21mm including crown race." Is this the of height both inserts of the headset and the crown cap? Lastly, the stem has two measurements. "50mm Black 31.8mm" means the space taken up on the steerer is 31.8mm? CurtisRider
Stack height 21mm including crown race=Height of the cups+crown race overall, it wont include the height of the top cap 50mm Black 31.8mm= 50mm is the distance between the steerer and the bars, 31.8mm is the clamp size for the bars. That stems a bit short for xc, although off the top of my head i cant think of anybody who makes a low profile xc stem. The steerer wants to be at least 2/3 through the height of the stem to be safe, ideally so that both bolts are able to tighten the stem
hI-OOPS-CAPS
I get the headset bit now. I'm unsure about the stem though. I knew I had seen 31.8mm before, it's the standard clamp size isn't it? Any ideas how much steerer tube the stem will need? I can't seem to find the technical spec of it. CurtisRider
31.8mm is for oversized bars (basically standard now), 25.4 being the older size that some people still run, you can run some shims if you wish to use a 25.4 bar in a 31.8 stem. As i said before, steerer tube needs to be in the stem at least 2/3 of the way, preferably more.
hI-OOPS-CAPS
My post might have been confusing. Although I asked how much steerer tube the stem will need, I actually meant how much the stem will actually take up. Thx The height has been found! Thanks Paul Edited September 20, 2012 by hI-OOPS-CAPS
