trialsiain
Hi at the minute i have 175mm cranks on a 24" echo trial... if i change to 170mm what advantages/ disadvantages will i notice ? Cheers
ghostrider88
Keep the 175mm,they offer more leverage which is big +.
rocky111
it's just basically like changing your gears, longer cranks = lower gear, short cranks = higher gear Edited September 13, 2012 by rocky111
trialsiain
would it be better with slightly higher gear or what ?
ghostrider88
I would compare 175mm cranks and 18:15 to 170mm with 18:16 ratio.Basically you get more power while the feel is very simmilar if not the same.
dave33
It won't change your gear ratio, just change the number of revs. 165mm would be best really Basically you will be traveling at the same speed but your legs will be going much slower which helps for run ups. More clearance You will lose around 3% leverage which you won't notice
trialsiain
Really ? That's tiny is it not
Mark W
More clearance You will lose around 3% leverage which you won't notice It might just be 'cos I'm fussy as shit about setups, but I found it was a noticeable difference just going from 170s to 175s. Dropping 10mm would make a reasonable difference in feel?

Mark W
I sort of hate the feel of short cranks in terms of the rotation of them and the way they make my gear ratio feel, but it's horses for courses I guess. I prefer that lighter geared feeling from having longer cranks (but still having the power as the ratio's the same), but again, it's personal preference to a large extent. Basically, if your cranks feel fine at the moment then there's no real point in changing them.

dave33
I don´t know if you´re kidding or actually being serious. Lol you bore me, Back on topic like mark says its personal. Best bet would be to try some out and see if you like or not.

I bore you but you keep me excited with all this unlogical stuff you say all the time.It is personal preference to an extent, but physics works for everyone the same, longer crank=more leverage=more power.Your problem with run ups is weird too, what if the run up is actually a steep hill?you will have hard time(harder) to even get to the obstacle with 165mm.And clearance isn´t an issue with modern geometry frames either.Oh,most elite riders use 175mm cranks,I think they know thing or two about clearance and run ups.But you can use whatever you like, but it doesn´t make it right or logical

Azarathal
Majority of Bmx cranks are 175mm and they have no clearance issues, it's only really useful for when dropping in I guess but still, no issues.
Mark W
They've actually started switching to shorter cranks on BMXs now as the shorter back ends mean it's way easier to clip your feet on your pegs (if you run them, that is). But yeah, that's not really the point...

Urm no they don't sorry but your just talking utter rubish now Even kenny has changed to 170mm about a year ago. I think koxx even supply full build 26" bikes with 170mm cranks ? Logically- the shorter the distance the muscle has to travel faster and more explosive it can be Edited September 14, 2012 by dave33

dave33
My sky came with 170mm standard. ? Any way good luck trying to convince Gilles coustellier to go back to 175 mm because you think it's logical Let me know how you get on

N.Wood
It makes no real difference to be honest, I stripped the thread outta my 170 and had a spare 175, seems fine
Martin Reynolds
It makes no real difference to be honest, I stripped the thread outta my 170 and had a spare 175, seems fine I found this out when disassembling my old t-bird. One crank was 160, the other 165. Considering your feet can sit anywhere on the pedals, i dont see how other people would notise??
