Muel
Yo, I just got a Galaxy S3, and after years of not being a "phone fanboy" and avoiding those gay screen protectors and silly clippy cases, I spent £30 this morning on an "Invisible Shield" (it's a screen protector but the shop boy said really cool things and made me buy it), and a silly clippy "casemate" case. What I want now though, is lots and lots of toys. Recommend things! First of all though, I want a generic extra case for it, like a gel padded, solid outer thing to protect it from hard knocks when I go climbing. Does such a thing exist? weirdoku
You actually spent £30 on a case and screen protector?
Muel
Yeh, looked on ebay for the same ones and they came to about £20-25 altogether with postage, so I just went to the shop. I know you can get screen protectors for next to nothing, but they (in my experience) have all been universally, shit. This one is super thin, has low enough friction to use, and was dead easy to apply. £15 well spent IMO. Worth mentioning as well that it has a lifetime guarantee, if I ever rip/scratch/damage it, I just return it to the shop and they'll replace it. £30 isn't exactly a lot of money anyway lol, doesn't really bother me if I could have saved a fiver. Luke Dunstan
Due out in the future, is a wireless charging pad. The phone has the tech in it, but the pad was delayed from launch. The vent case looks cool but offers little protection for climbing. I bought the case with the built in flappy front, I don't like it though. You want it? it's white. Muel
No thanks dude. Looked at the flippy one, but it's not got enough protection. The current clippy case/screen protector combo seems perfect for every day stuff, but for climbing/outdoor stuff I want something much more hardcore. Ideally a hard outer case with some form of padding inside, so I can just drop the phone in with the clippy case attached and it'll have the whole thing protected from big impacts/loads. (Think climbing gear smashing into the centre of the screen). Kinda like a solid guitar case, but small. Looked at the wireless charging mats, but they need you to take the case off, which is more hassle than plugging in the charger. Very cool though... Depends how much they are. JD™
Thought about just a Tesco or similar phone for when you go climbing?
Mikee
I don't see the gain of the wireless charging pads. I can't balance up the price it would cost and the space it will take up against plugging it in. Unless it was properly wireless needing no pad to sit on, I think it is a waste of money. It is basically a dock I can get for my iphone for £2.50 on ebay but you don't have to put it on it a certain way. Back on topic, I also think you should consider a cheap tesco phone for climbing. Unless you get a seriously knock proof case, dropping it from lets say 10ft is probably going to do some damage.
isitafox
Get an otterbox. They tend to be pretty hardcore cases, all the track workers at work have them on their company issue gayphone 4's and they get well battered about!
Jake.
I've always wanted an S3. How much did you get it for? If it's on a contract, what are you getting per month? Good choice with screen protector and case, not really much else you can get other than that.
Bigman
I have also just got an S3, I wanted a case because I thought the phone actualy felt too smooth, an would just slip out of my hands, so I bought this case: http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1497.l2649 I don't like things to be too bulky in my pocket and this case is such a good fit and pretty thin (although feels pretty tough) one guy actualy didn't think it was a case! Although I doubt it would really be suitable for climbing, like has been suggested, either get a cheap phone to carry or leave it in your bag at the bottom! Muel
Thought about just a Tesco or similar phone for when you go climbing? Briefly, but I like having the interwebs to look stuff up (routes, crag information etc) and my camera and adding people to facebook and that. I don't see the gain of the wireless charging pads. It's more the risk of climbing gear bashing against it in my bag, but I see your point. Get an otterbox. They tend to be pretty hardcore cases, all the track workers at work have them on their company issue gayphone 4's and they get well battered about! My mate has one, and I don't like it. Fine for dropping them but wouldn't like to twat the screen with a hammer. (Again climbing gear bashing into it). I've always wanted an S3. How much did you get it for? If it's on a contract, what are you getting per month? Good choice with screen protector and case, not really much else you can get other than that. Get one, it's immense. £37 a month. 600 mins, unlimited texts and 750mb data on O2. If I wasn't bothered about the colour (I really like the whiteness), then I'd probably consider one of them. The issue isn't dropping it, it's the thought of it being bashed around in my bag. Ideally I just want a solid container with some padding that I can stick my phone straight into, with it's current case still attached. Can't find anything suitable though. Anyone got any experience with docking stations and the likelihood of being able to dock my phone to charge it with the slim clippy case attached? Anyone got any experience with docking stations and the likelihood of being able to dock my phone to charge it with the slim clippy case attached? I was considering it. I have an iPhone 4 at the moment, I'm waiting to see what iPhone 5 is bringing to the market. They have a LOT to compete against so I'm expecting a very good phone, if it's as good as I'm expecting I'll get it. If not, then I'm getting the S3. That sounds like a rather good contract, is that covered by insurance too? I'd probably go for slightly less minutes if it's cheaper. I really hate the idea of paying more than £40 a month for a phone/contract, and most of them are 24month schemes...
Muel
Nope no insurance, I don't believe in it. I'm hardcore like that. I've never had insurance and through never having it, have now saved enough to buy an S3 outright so seems worthwhile to me! The way I see it is that a £40 phone bill is roughly 10% of my monthly bills, and it's something I can appreciate and enjoy several times a day, whereas I never appreciate electricity or council tax in a day, they're just things that I pay for. As monthly bills go, I'm fairly happy with it. Edited September 11, 2012 by Muel

If you dropped it badly once, you can just replace it (lets say insurance costs £5 a month, it'd be £240 in 2 years). It's a hard one really... It's so goddamn expensive, but if you did drop/break your phone you won't have to pay £450 for a new one. Not many people get away with 2 years of constant phone use without cracking the screen. Muel
I've only broken one phone in over 5 years. Wouldn't be £450 to sort anyway, I'd just buy a new screen and fit it myself. If you only crack the outer glass and it still works fine, then it's a £15~ fix, or you can get the entire LCD/digitizer for £120.

Are S3's glued to LCD screen like Apple did with the iPhone 4 to make more money? I've been using a broken screen for a year... I would get it repaired but I really can't be f**ked for £100 odd. It is relatively easy to do and there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube.

Muel
So the S3 screen is glued as well? Jake.
Mindf**k They sell the screens seperate from LCD screens yet they're glued. I guess you have to glue it on? Unless the screens damaged too, you'd have to replace it at like hundred dollars more.
Mikee
There are no screws that I can see, so I think we must be on the right track. You can get just the glass for the Iphone 4 as well but I heard that it is such a faff getting the old LCD off and gluing it back on, that you might as well spend the extra £10 - £15 on getting it all in one piece.
