Miss-Higgy
Looking at the price of white 3 piece cranks it don't seem worth the spend when the cranks i have are fine. Has anyone tried painting a set of cranks or is it the worst idea i've ever had?
LukasMcNeal
I had silver ones and sprayed them black. It rubbed off rather quick and went like this!
Mikee
Never done it myself but cranks get a lot of wear on the front of them from use. So I imagion the paint would wear off quite quick. It's worth a try though. Edit: Snaked. Edited September 7, 2012 by Mikee
Boumsong
You could get a bit more life out of the paint by lacquering it. Ultimately, anodising is the one when it comes to coating cranks.
Tomm
Depends what you're using it for (and how spazzy your feet are). Painted cranks (home-sprayed or otherwise) are stupid for MTB IMHO - the coating rubs off in no time thanks to abrasive grit etc. I bought a set of cranks which had been professionally coated with some hardened paint, they looked shit after a couple of months (I took them back to silver and now they look fine again). Similarly, one of my friends has some 2012 XT cranks and the black paint has worn off making them look years old. On the other hand, my road bike has black cranks and they're still all black. They don't get dirty / gritty and I'm usually spinning smooth circles so they don't get rubbed so much.
Miss-Higgy
Yeah, i did think it wasn't one of my best idea's. I do have super spazzy feet aswell, i'm forever adjusting my feet through being a mong! Conclusion, if i wanted them black, maybe. White will be awkward, and probably fall off. So i'll just buy some once i've killed these or feeling rich! Thanks guys
banashapan
What about giving them a powder coat? It'll come off over time, but I imagine less so than if you were to rattle can cranks. I know of a few people that have used Amourtex for powder coating cranks and they seem to hold up ok!
