Onza V-Brake Pads

Recommended Posts

When i ran my old v-brake (front - avid sd7 arms, clarks cable, avid fr5 lever) the onza brake pads were amazing, most powerful and loudest brake i ever owned. I've now got rear vee brake (avid sd7 arms, clarks cable, avid sd7 lever) and the pads are terrible, hardly any bite, not much hold, basically silent.

Thoughts?

I think its to do with how the mounts are mounted? Like my front vee, spinning the wheel forwards like normal its pretty damn silentish but going the other way it bites so loud its mad.

Tried spinning the wheel the other way and seeing if it's louder/bity?

Also could it be to do with the rim you have? I know some pads work with other rims and some don't like.

oh okay, i might give the pads a switch over and try running them the other way round, because one side is offset and is longer than the other side?

yeah it is louder, not much more bite or hold though.

V!Z rim, oldish grind, tiny amount of tar, but it doesn't do anything. the front rim is an onza zoot that they were previously run on.

I've got either phatvee or belaey vee pads (sold as belaey but looks more like phats) on a completely dead grind, no booster and it's phenomenal, I just assumed vees were amazing no matter what pads or rim :P

I've rode trials on a few bikes at work with vees, black pads and non-linear cables and it's been fine :)

Or maybe, your previous setup only worked well because of it actually where on the front..? In my opinion you need badass brakepads on the rear and a nice grind too. While the setup on the front with pads, grind etc, aren't as important. I would basically say, your problem is that you use shit onza pads, get some TNN's or something among the lines, and a get a nice grind. Job done.

Nah,it´s just how Vees on the back usually are, they are silent in 99%,they aren´t bitey either, but they hold better than maggie in 100%.It´s mostly about setup too, even cheap generic pads like onza etc can work oustandingly good if coupled with good lever and decent arms, clean and well grinded rim a pads hitting the rim perfectly flat.If they don´t hold, you did something wrong.Bite is something you have to deal with if yo want to run grind, only time my vee is really bitey(in fact more bitey than most maggies)is when my rim is almost smooth and with little tar,in that case they are also very loud, but hold isn´t perfect so I prefer excellent hold and silent brake.

Can partly agree with you ghostrider, but partly not. My setup with pretty "standard" tektro arms, avid speed dial 7 lever, and rockman blue pads where far more superior than my maggy where. It where loud as f*ck and bitey to. And i ran my maggy with booster, and my vee's without. So yeah, i think it's pretty much up to the pads.

Do the pads have chamfers if they do then they're belaeys if not then they're phat pads.

Whats a non-linear cable?

file the grind smooth? or if you dont have a file.. work your way up the sandpaper grits?

i have been thinking about doing this.. but then it could make it worse so i want to do that as a last resort kinda thing.

Infact carl you saw it being used by darrel didn't you what was it like on his bike?

I did wonder this actually but i've got heatsink yellow pads too and they're better but not as good as i feel they should be either.

Oh okay then.. the hold isn't really there either though. I'll try giving the whole setup a clean and everything see what happens.

I love my front vee purely for the fact that it just holds regardless of anything, it's like all in your fingertips how much hold you want too. That doesn't make sense Iknow.

This is what my old vee used to be like.

Well heatsink yellows is shit pads too, they're only good with a sharp sharp grind thats brand new, they go shite after 10 minutes again. So yeah buy some GOOD pads. and set it up well, grind your rim again and bam you have a awesome brake!:)

Awaiting comments from heatsink yellow fan boys.

Yeah i was going to say, i've never been a massive fan of yellows, they're okay, nothing better. I've got some magura coustellier pads, would it be posible to put those pads in the heatsink vee backings?

Ah hahah actually I hate them, but they seem to work well for some.

It should be:)

Saw it being used by darryl? I bought his bike didnt i you spastic. Yeah with those heatsink yellows on a completely smooth rim it was well good, dont see why it wouldnt work foryou. Its gotta be better than having a grind, the grind on that viz rim just dies anyway dont it?

Heads up... I took the grind off a rim and polished it.. It took ages...
