Andeee
Or an old headtube of a frame works ;-)
tomturd
https://www.google.c...fBouY0QX46oGwCA http://www.cyclingde...full/SC-915.jpg thats alright for people with a workshop full of tools flathead screwdriver and a hammer, tapping lightly all the way round, always worked for me.
clerictgm
Well, what I done: Is it ok?
Luke Rainbird
So long as the bearing sits fully in place on it and spins freely then you should be ok with it like that.
Tony Harrison
Well, what I DID: Is it ok? You're clearly retarded, so yes, this is entirely acceptable. Even if the handlebars do not turn when you've preloaded the headset, you'll still be good to ride

If your mechanical aptitude sits somewhere between a corpse and an ape, and you therefore find hitting things accurately hard, you can whip out an adjustable spanner, open that around your steerer tube then hit the side of the head of the spanner instead. Spreads the force a bit better and you'd have to be a total spacker to damage the race itself. Should also keep it a little more level too.
Sam Nichols
Am I the only one who just puts it in the frame with the lower cup and bearings installed and then just smacks it against the bearings until its flush?
murph82
i put one on the other day. Pressed it down as far as possible then put it into the frame with the whole headset, popped the stem on and an extra spacer or two and just preloaded until it was down. I have got a big ass hollow hex bolt for running cables through giving plenty of thread contact to draw up on, a little Allen head bolt may struggle? I've an open bearing internal headset and hasn't seemed to have damaged it?

Even if the handlebars do not turn when you've preloaded the headset, you'll still be good to ride Split races work exactly the same on a cartidge bearing. Plenty of headsets come with a split race as standard. I always just cut mine now. Standard races just deform over time from installing anyway.
SamKidney
If it aint split, split it. Split crown races are so nice and easy to install. No drawbacks at all.
