Blake
Right, basically this morning I changed my piston and spring in my 04 magura because it had a leak. I've been soaking it in wd-40 to try and get it fast and responsive but it's still not returning as fast as the lever is falling out, I greased the "new" piston with lithium grease (the pink stuff, tf2), was that a bad idea? The brake is bled with water by the way. All I want is for my maggie to be like everyone else's I feel on a ride, where you pull it in and it pops out super quickly, what can I do to get this? My bike is still sitting outside in the garden with a lever full of wd-40 Thank you in advance x
harmertrials
Could need a new o-ring on the lever piston, but if like you say the lever returns before the slave, sounds like another sticky piston (slave) issue. I just drop a few drops of lube.. fairy liquid.. spit.. whatever onto the slave piston whilst the pad is fully out, and just work the lever loads so it lubes it up. Also make sure both your pads are an even distance from the rim without any tpa on first.
LEON
I would defintely not use lithium on the plastic Magura piston, it's way too thick, you need an oil not a grease. Edited August 12, 2012 by LEON
dann2707
Tried sliding the piston down the bore with out the spring to see if its got a shit load of friction (technical term )?
weebryan
Try sliding piston without spring and o ring this will tell you either its one or the other if piston is tight put it in a drill and slow speed right down and wrap wet and dry around and take a little of bottom end of piston, grease and oils can make rubber swell so use veg oil or maggie oil for seals
Blake
shit, shouldn't of greased it then nah my slaves are fine I oiled them last week, so they should be alright. So should I clean off the lithium grease and use something else?
Dan_Trials
Won't do any harm but if a seal is already swollen then that is the problem, the grease just won't be helping.
Blake
sheit I've heard you can microwave pistons?
Dan_Trials
I'm sure you can, don't know if it would help though
dann2707
I think sticking it in the oven de-swells that bitch.
Dan_Trials
Just buy new stuff, fit it properly, set it up properly, job done.
MikeCottTrials
I think sticking it in the oven de-swells that bitch. You serious? That seems like some drastic action to me
dann2707
Completely serious one secQuite an interesting read
Blake
might pop it in the oven tomorrow, how long for and at what heat? D:
dann2707
I couldn't tell you. It shouldn't instantly melt though, I had my car lights in my oven at 180c for 15 minutes and they showed no signs of melting at all. However they are large and the piston is tiny so all the heat will be absorbed into it, oh and diff material. I'm not sure haha
Blake
might try and sand it, what grit sandpaper?
dann2707
Really fine! Be better if you can get wet and dry paper rather than sandpaper as you have much more control and the finish will be beautiful. Sandpapering it is like sowing a button on your tshirt with a chainsaw.

Blake
all opinions welcomed here. EDIT: Unless you're asking for a frozen brake picture (would not recommend) Edited August 13, 2012 by DrStix
