Maxx
Hi, Is there anybody here that tried both 05's and 11's HS33 (with 4 finger lever blade) ? I noticed that 11's ones are flexier and spongy, but I don't understand why ? Hoses are the same, cylinders the same, lever piston the same, ... etc. Does someone have an idea ? Jake.
Water bleed/oil bleed?
Laurence--Trials
I'd agree with this, i've had 04, 05, rb lever, and magura 11. The newest is the most flexy, it is made from plastic though so that might be the lever body flexing slightly too? Other than that i dont know why they could be like that. The lever body is made from metal I'm sure, they just have plastic caps to protect the lever body. I swear the lever is made from metal too? Maxx
Antifreeze bleed for both (always work with my previons hs33) The lever is made from metal, I don't think it comes from there, but the lever body is made from plastic for sure (hs33 and hs11, I tried to cut a HS33's body which was crashed, and it was plastic). 315r
Lever body of hs33 2011 is made from plastic!!!!!
Mark W
They're not made of plastic.
Jake.
........ I already said the removable cover is plastic. Read the thread guys.
Mark W
Yeah, but they're not made out of metal either. It's Magura's own composite material rather than one or the other...
craigjames
........ I already said the removable cover is plastic. Read the thread guys. But you also said that the lever body was made of metal, which it is not. As Mark said magura use a proprietry composite, designed to be lighter and stronger than cast magnesium/alu alloys. Got to say i've never liked the look of the new brakes, i'll be sad when my 05 maguras fail and I can't get any more.
Martin Reynolds
Yeah, but they're not made out of metal either. It's Magura's own composite material rather than one or the other... Considering 'plastic' is a really generic name for synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that are moldable, doesn't that mean that plastic could be a composite, or the composite could contain plastic? JDâ„¢
Contain is a pretty operative word there. I contain water. I am not water.
FamilyBiker
unfortunately the new composite material IS way flexier then aluminium was.some things change in a good way (like shadow plus mechs),some dont. in our workshop i am adjusting new brakes all the time.maggies 2010 downwards:solid.maggies 2011 onwards:spongy. and that sh.. is with all types of pads, even with a booster we tested that was made for 4 point mounts on my frame. i dont like the new ones honestly and i will never use them.thank god i have spares in my basement for the next 30 years haha edit:yes riding 05 ones and therefore tried both on the same bike Edited August 3, 2012 by FamilyBiker
Maxx
So the flex finally comes from the lever body ?? I hope the next generation will be better ... in 2017 Does Magura have lot of stock of 2005 levers ?
AdamR28
The new lever blades have a higher leverage ratio. That is why the brakes feel more flexy, because they have more power. If you want a brake that feels like last years 4-finger blade, get the shorter blade. If you want even more power, get the longer blade, but remember it won't feel as solid. We have set a few up here, always felt absolutely fine. Magura don't have much stock of 2005 stuff at all.
Maxx
Because of a longer lever blade ? And how is the leverage ratio of a 2 finger blade (2011) compared to a 4 finger blade (2005) ?
dann2707
I hope the next generation will be better ... in 2017 They will fix the flex issue but do something stupid like make it so you can't rebleed or the hosing is made from copper or some shite lol Edited August 3, 2012 by dann2707
Martin Reynolds
They will fix the flex issue but do something stupid like make it so you can't rebleed or the hosing is made from copper or some shite lol Sounds about right. IMO the only improvement the new Magura's have are split clamps.
Mark W
Removing the weaker 'right angle' bit from the '05 lever and using a stronger, more reliable TPA system are arguably improvements. Fun fact - had someone tell me on the phone two days ago that they felt Joe Maher's brakes (2011 Maguras) and they were surprised at how good they felt and how stiff they were. AdamR28
Because of a longer lever blade ? And how is the leverage ratio of a 2 finger blade (2011) compared to a 4 finger blade (2005) ? No, a higher leverage ratio. They are pretty much the same.
dann2707
But what about the whole much harder to bleed system? Every bike i've felt with the new maguras on felt shockingly spongey. Maybe that is because there's more power being transferrerd but i'd say going to a brake which feels less solid is 1 step forward and 2 steps back imo. Maxx
No, a higher leverage ratio. They are pretty much the same. But I thought the lever and cylinder piston were the same ?
AdamR28
But what about the whole much harder to bleed system? It's not, it's very very easy. I would be possible to argue it's easier than the older style brakes, in fact. We'll try and do a video if / when we get time... But I thought the lever and cylinder piston were the same ? Pistons are the same, leverage ratio of the lever blade is not.
Joe Papasnap Maher
Video would be good adam. I know a few people who seem to be struggling with bleeding there 2011's.
AdamR28
I don't understand how lol. But yeah, we'll see what we can do.
